Scientists are proposing an innovative way to tackle climate changeThe research published in Environmental Research Letters and led by the scientists at Harvard and Yale universities, used a technique known as a stratospheric aerosol injection, which they say could cut the rate of global warming to half. The technique involves spraying large amounts of sulfate particles into the Earth's lower stratosphere at altitudes as high as 12 miles. The scientists proposed delivering these sulfates with specially designed high-altitude aircraft, balloons or large naval-style guns.Despite the technology being undeveloped, the researchers said that developing a new, purpose-built tanker with substantial payload capabilities would neither be technologically difficult nor prohibitively expensive, reported CNN.However, the report does acknowledge the fact that the technique is purely hypothetical."We simply show that a hypothetical deployment program commencing 15 years hence, while both highly ...

The Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) has initiated a massive mission to clean the Dal Lake ahead of the onset of peak winter in Jammu and Kashmir.Unbridled growth of weeds, particularly in the Hazratbal Basin of the lake, is taking a heavy toll on the fragile ecosystem of the water body. The thick growth of lily weeds also hampers the movement of shikaras, which are light, flat-bottomed boats, and affects the overall aesthetic beauty of the lake. The mission, therefore, aims to clear weeds like lily pads, creepers, algae, water plants and other waste material present in the water body.Being one of the most noteworthy tourist destinations, Dal Lake attracts a large number of tourists from across the world every year. After multiple drives by using machines in cleaning Dal Lake, LAWDA has now started relying on human power to clear the lily pads within the lake.LAWDA has deployed 1500 skilled labourers for the task, although the authority has acquired weed harvesters and .

All of the 145 pilot whales that stranded themselves on a remote New Zealand beach have died. However, conservation workers are hoping to save some of the eight pygmy killer whales that remained stranded Monday at the other end of the country in an unrelated event. A hiker discovered the pilot whales in two pods about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) apart late Saturday on Stewart Island. About 75 were already dead and conservation workers decided to euthanise the others due to their poor condition and remote location. Only about 375 people live on Stewart Island, which is also called Rakiura. The whales were found at Mason's Bay about 35 kilometres (22 miles) from the main township of Oban. "You feel for the animals, it's just a really sad event," said Ren Leppens, the Rakiura operations manager for the Department of Conservation. "It's the kind of thing you don't want to see. You wish you could understand the reasoning why the whales strand better, so you could intervene." Leppens said the .

Environment experts have said inducing artificial rain by cloud-seeding to wash away pollutants in Delhi may bring relief but only for a short duration, and the government should take systematic and coordinated actions to reduce air pollution at source. They said measures to bring down air pollution levels should be undertaken without having a second thought, but there is also a need for a long-term and focused approach to address this problem. With air pollution levels in Delhi often reaching alarming levels during winters, authorities have said they might induce artificial rain by cloud-seeding to wash away pollutants in the air.
