Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on Friday denied claims that demonetisation prevented farmers from purchasing seeds. Some media reports had claimed that a report by the Agriculture Ministry conceded that farmers could not buy seeds due to the cash crunch in the wake of note-ban in November 2016. There was no ban on use of scrapped currency to buy seeds, the Union minister said, adding statistics show that purchase of seeds increased after demonetisation, compared to the previous year. "There was no ban on purchase of seeds with the (scrapped) Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes. In the year before demonetisation, 308 lakh tonnes of seed was bought by farmers, while it reached 348 lakh tonnes during the year in which demonetisation was implemented," Singh said at the Agro Vision Exhibition here. Delhi bus commuters will now be able to spot locations of cluster buses at intervals of 10 seconds with the help of open transit data (OTD) which will be shared on a dedicated portal launched by the Delhi government Friday. Delhi becomes the first city in the country to open up transit data of city buses, that will provide static and real time data through the website -- www.otd.delhi.gov.in -- including geo-coordinates of bus stops, route maps, timetables, and real time GPS feeds of bus locations every 10 seconds, said a government statement. "This initiative will provide a lot of useful information at the finger tips of citizen and encourage more and more people to switch to public transport, thereby impacting pollution," Delhi Transport minister Kailash Gahlot said. In the beta version launched Friday, real-time data of around 1,700 buses operated under the Cluster scheme will be provided. Delhi's air quality slipped back in to 'very poor' category Friday due to accumulation of pollutants owing to low wind speed, even as authorities warned further increase in pollution level on Saturday. The overall air quality index was recorded at 337 which falls in the "very poor" category, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. Five areas in Delhi -- Anand Vihar, Wazirpur, Bawana, Jahangirpuri and Mundka -- recorded severe air quality, according to the data. While as many as 23 localities recorded 'very poor' air quality and six 'poor', the data said. The level of PM2.5 (or particulate matters 2.5 -- particles in the air with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres) was recorded at 205 and the PM10 level was recorded at 379, it said. The Goa government is promoting a novel technique to improve crop yield: asking farmers to chant ancient Vedic 'mantra' (hymns). The Maharashtra government has asked seed companies to pay a compensation of Rs 1,147 crore to the farmers whose crops were affected by the pink bollworm, a pest, in the Kharif season last year. In a written reply in the Legislative Assembly, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Chandrakant Patil said Thursday that the third instalment of compensation was disbursed through the Revenue and Forest department on November 1. Twelve cotton seed firms have now moved the Bombay High Court against the government's order to compensate, and the court has granted a stay to the payment of compensation to remaining farmers, the reply said. In Buldhana district, cotton crop on 1.75 lakh hectares was damaged by various pests including the pink bollworm, Patil said in reply to another question.
