Air pollution leads to millions of asthma attacks annually worldwide: Study

Air pollution may be to blame for up to 33 million emergency asthma attack visits to hospital every year, with half of the visits estimated to occur in South and East Asian countries, notably India and China, a global study has found. Asthma is the most prevalent chronic respiratory disease worldwide, affecting about 358 million people, said researchers, including those from the University of York in the UK. Countries like India and China may be harder hit by the asthma burden because they have large populations and tend to have fewer restrictions on factories belching smoke and other sources of pollution, they said. The findings, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, suggests car emissions and other types of pollution may be a significant source of serious asthma attacks. "This is the first global study of the potential impacts of air pollution on serious asthma attacks that cause people to visit emergency rooms in hospitals around the world," said Johan ...

China, France launch satellite to study climate change

China sent its first ever satellite built in partnership with another country into space on Monday, a device tasked with helping scientists better predict dangerous cyclones and climate change by monitoring ocean surface winds and waves. A Long March 2C carrier rocket blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China's Gobi Desert at 0043 GMT, according to China's State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence. The 650-kilogram (1,430 pound) China-France Oceanography Satellite (CFOSAT) is the first satellite jointly built by China and France and will allow climate scientists to better understand interactions between oceans and the atmosphere. It's fitted with two radars: the French-made SWIM spectrometer, which will measure the direction and the wavelength of waves, and China's SCAT, a scatterometer that will analyse the force and direction of winds. The data will be collected and analysed in both countries. The instruments will ...

'World's first bio-brick grown from human urine'

Researchers say they have developed the world's first bio-brick grown from human urine, an advance with significant consequences for waste recycling and upcycling. The bio-bricks are created through a natural process called microbial carbonate precipitation, said researchers from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa. Loose sand is colonised with bacteria that produce urease enzyme which breaks down the urea in urine while producing calcium carbonate through a complex chemical reaction. This cements the sand into any shape, whether it is a solid column or the rectangular building brick described in the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering. Suzanne Lambert and Vukheta Mukhari from UCT tested various bio-brick shapes and tensile strengths to produce an innovative building material. The development is also good news for the environment and global warming as bio-bricks are made in moulds at room temperature, researchers said. Regular bricks are kiln-fired at ...

Climate change a threat to oysters: Study

According to a recent study, climate change is a threat to even the most tolerant oysters.Climate change-associated weather events may cause flooding that threatens the survival of the Olympia oyster. Oceans around the world typically have a salt content (salinity) of around 3.5 per cent, but the percentage varies more in shallow coastal waters affected by rainfall.Researchers studied three groups of Olympia oysters from different areas of the California coast where the influence of rainfall on seawater salinity varies. The findings of the study were presented at the American Physiological Society's (APS) Comparative Physiology: Complexity and Integration conference in New Orleans. One group was native to a large estuary--a body of seawater near the mouth of a river--that was routinely exposed to freshwater flooding from extreme precipitation, which decreased the salinity of the oysters' surroundings.A second group lived in a small estuary that received much less freshwater exposure, ..
