Goa Food and Drugs Administration Minister Vishwajit Rane said Monday that he has asked the secretary of health department to move a note to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, seeking a ban on the import of fish. During a recent meeting with FDA officials there was a discussion on dealing with the fear that the fish coming from outside the state may have been preserved by using formalin, he said. "I have requested the secretary of Health department to move a note to the chief minister regarding imposing ban on the import of fish for a period of 30 days," Rane said. Import of fish from outside had been banned earlier during July-August this year for fear of presence of formalin, which is toxic, in the fish. Until a state-of-the-art facility to check quality of fish is not set up in Goa, a ban on import is necessitated, the minister said.

Amid rising air pollution ahead of winter, Union Earth Sciences Minister Harsh Vardhan launched a system on Monday that will help in forewarning any large-scale air pollution events over the national capital region (NCR), a statement said. The 'Air Quality Early Warning System' is designed to predict extreme air pollution events and give alerts to take necessary steps as per Centre's Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The air pollution system has been developed jointly by the scientists at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, India Meteorological Department and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). The warning system consists of a real time observations of air quality over Delhi region and details about natural aerosols like dust (from dust storms) and particulate matter using different satellite data sets, predictions of air pollutants from two different air quality prediction systems based on state-of-the-art atmospheric chemistry .
The emergency plan to combat air pollution came into force Monday in the Delhi-NCR where air quality remained poor, even as the Centre claimed that bad air quality days in the city have come down considerably this year. The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which has come into effect for the second year, ensures stringent actions are taken based on the air quality. He asked them to implement the guidelines as prescribed under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme for effective control of Zika. "States have been asked to intensify vector control strategies which include anti-larvae activities and fogging, and also follow the guidelines as prescribed under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme for effective control of Zika virus disease," a health ministry official said. The Gujarat High Court on Monday said that experts should decide whether all lions in the state's Gir forest need to be vaccinated to prevent the outbreak of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV). The state government had told HC during the last hearing that out of the 23 lions which were found dead in Gir forest in September, 17 had succumbed to CDV and bacterial infection. These lions had died in the Dalkhaniya range of Gir (east) division of Amreli district. A bench of Chief Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice V M Pancholi is hearing two PILs, one filed by wildlife activist Biren Pandya and a suo motu PIL on the unnatural deaths of lions due to electrocution and falling into open wells.
