Mount Everest, the high-altitude rubbish dump

Decades of commercial mountaineering have turned Mount Everest into the world's highest rubbish dump as an increasing number of big-spending climbers pay little attention to the ugly footprint they leave behind. Fluorescent tents, discarded climbing equipment, empty gas canisters and even human excrement litter the well-trodden route to the summit of the 8,848-metre (29,029-foot) peak. "It is disgusting, an eyesore," Pemba Dorje Sherpa, who has summited Everest 18 times, told AFP. "The mountain is carrying tonnes of waste." As the number of climbers on the mountain has soared -- at least 600 people have scaled the world's highest peak so far this year alone -- the problem has worsened. Meanwhile, melting glaciers caused by global warming are exposing trash that has accumulated on the mountain since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first successful summit 65 years ago. Efforts have been made. Five years ago Nepal implemented a $4,000 rubbish deposit per team that would be ...

Mammals going nocturnal to avoid humans: Study

Human activity is causing the planet's mammals to flee daylight for the protection of night, a study has found. The study, published in the journal Science, represents the first effort to quantify the global effects of human activity on the daily activity patterns of wildlife. Its results highlight the powerful and widespread process by which animals alter their behaviour alongside people: human disturbance is creating a more nocturnal natural world. "Catastrophic losses in wildlife populations and habitats as a result of human activity are well documented, but the subtler ways in which we affect animal behaviour are more difficult to detect and quantify," said Kaitlyn Gaynor, a PhD candidate at University of California, Berkeley in the US. Researchers applied a meta-analysis approach, using data for 62 species across six continents to look for global shifts in the timing of daily activity of mammals in response to humans. These data were collected by various approaches, including ...

Greenpeace India urges Environment Ministry to speed up rolling out National Clean Air Programme

With a massive haze of dust enveloping Delhi and the pollution levels dropping to "severe" category, a green body has urged the Environment Ministry to speed up rolling out its National Clean Air Programme, which proposes multiple strategies to combat air pollution. Greenpeace India said air pollution is a "silent and invisible killer" and a national health emergency, asserting that big polluters must be held accountable for the menace. The air pollution situation in Delhi remained "severe" for the fifth day on Saturday, but authorities expressed hope that the air quality would improve after pollutants begin to disperse. The pollution level had dipped to "severe plus" category at on one point on Saturday but the situation was gradually improving, the Centre-run System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research institute (SAFAR) said. "Air pollution is prevalent all year round and throughout the country and not just limited to Delhi. The environment ministry must speed up its .

Karaikal port expedites work on mechanised coal-handling

Karaikal Port Private Ltd has expedited work on mechanisation of coal-handling through a fully-automated conveyor belt at the cost of Rs 600 crore and it would be completed within two months, a top port official said. Speaking to reporters here, Chairman and Managing Director of the port G R K Reddy said more than 300 technicians were now working on the mechanisation and the work would be completed within 60 days. Weather forecasts may get precise soon

It has been a known fact for long that rain forecasts are flawed, as a lot of factors like evaporation are not taken into account. The researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia have developed a system that improves the precision of forecasts by accounting for evaporation in rainfall estimates, particularly for locations 30 miles or more from the nearest National Weather Service radar."Right now, forecasts are generally not accounting for what happens to a raindrop after it is picked up by radar," said a researcher, Neil Fox, "Evaporation has a substantial impact on the amount of rainfall that actually reaches the ground. By measuring that impact, we can produce more accurate forecasts that give farmers, agriculture specialists and the public the information they need."A dual polarization radar was used ends out two radar beams polarized horizontally and vertically, to differentiate between the sizes of raindrops by researchers Fox and Quinn Pallardy. It was seen that the size .
