Giant mosquito with 11.15cm wingspan found in China

A super-sized mosquito with a wingspan of 11.15 centimetres has been found in China's Sichuan province, entomologists said today. According to Zhao Li, curator of the Insect Museum of West China, the mosquito belongs to the world's largest mosquito species Holorusia mikado. It was found in August last year during a field trip to Mount Qingcheng in Chengdu, capital of south-west China's Sichuan province, Xinhua news agency reported. First found in Japan, the Holorusia mikado species normally have a wing span of about eight centimetres, researchers said. "These mosquitoes look horrendous, but do not feed on blood. The adults have a lifespan of only a few days and mainly feed on nectar," Li said. There are thousands of types of mosquitoes in the world, however, barely 100 species feed on blood and may be a problem for humans, he said. In the western parts of Sichuan, Holorusia mikado, also known as the crane fly, are mainly found in the Chengdu plain and in mountainous areas below 2,200 .

Graphene-based greener, stronger concrete developed

Scientists have developed a new greener, stronger and more durable concrete using the wonder-material graphene, which they say could revolutionise the construction industry. Researchers from the University of Exeter in the UK developed a pioneering new technique that uses nanoengineering technology to incorporate graphene into traditional concrete production. Graphene is a form of carbon consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. The new composite material, which is more than twice as strong and four times more water resistant than existing concretes, can be used directly by the construction industry on building sites, researchers said. The graphene-reinforced concentre material also drastically reduced the carbon footprint of conventional concrete production methods, making it more sustainable and environmentally friendly. The new technique, described in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, could pave the way for other nanomaterials to be ...

Sea of solar panels turns Mexican desert green

From a distance, it looks like a deep-blue sea has formed in the middle of the Mexican desert. But this is no mirage -- it's the largest solar park in Latin America. With 2.3 million solar panels -- covering the equivalent of 2,200 football fields in the arid northern state of Coahuila -- the Villanueva power plant, built by Italian energy company Enel, is part of Mexico's push to generate 43 percent of its electricity from clean sources by 2024. Arrayed across the sand in seemingly endless rows that stretch to the horizon, the solar panels are made to turn in tandem with the sun, like a giant field of shimmering metallic sunflowers. The $650-million project came online in December and is due to produce 1,700 gigawatt hours when fully operational later this year -- enough to power 1.3 million homes. Mexico won plaudits from environmentalists in 2015 when it became the first emerging country to announce its emissions reduction targets for the United Nations climate accord, ambitiously .

China may avoid 94,000 deaths with climate policies: study

China could avoid nearly 94,000 premature deaths and save a whopping $339 billion in health costs over the next 12 years by honouring its carbon reduction commitments under the Paris climate accord, a study showed today. The country has pledged to reach peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 at the latest and to cut carbon emissions per unit of economic output (GDP) by 60-65 percent compared to 2005 levels. The study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology published in the journal Nature Climate Change said China would have to slash CO2 emissions by about four percent each year to save nearly 94,000 lives through cleaner air in that timespan. Researchers estimated that health-related savings could be about four times what it would cost Beijing to meet its climate goals. "The country could actually come out net positive, just based on the health co-benefits associated with air quality improvements, relative to the cost of a climate policy," said co-author Noelle Eckley Selin, an ...
