Chinese scientists develop sponge that can separate oil, water

Scientists in China have developed an artificial sponge that can separate oil and water and can be used for treating water contaminated by industrial sewage, a media report said today. "It is 97 per cent effective in separating water and oil," Liu Dongyan, a researcher with the Institute of Metal Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was quoted as saying by the state-run Xinhua news agency. A paper on the research undertaken by the institute based in Shenyang, capital of north China's Liaoning Province, was published in the latest issue of the international journal Advanced Materials Interfaces. Alaskan snow more than doubles due to global warming: study

Snowfall in central Alaska has more than doubled since the mid 1800s, said a study today which pointed the finger at global warming. Two ice cores drilled into Mount Hunter in the Denali National Park, revealed a 117-percent increase in wintertime snowfall in south-central Alaska since about 1840, researchers wrote in the journal Scientific Reports. Summer snow also increased, by nearly 50 percent. "We were shocked when we first saw how much snowfall has increased," said Erich Osterberg of Darmouth College, who co- authored the study. "We had to check and double-check our results to make sure of the findings." Next, the team set out to find out why. Scientific models predict that global precipitation -- rain or snow -- would increase by as much as two percent per degree of global warming. Warmer air holds more moisture. This accounted for some, but not most, of the Denali snowfall increase, the team said. They found another contributor: the strengthening of a low-pressure .

Re-examine notification exempting realty projects from prior

The NGT has directed the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to re-examine a notification exempting real estate projects with a built-up area measuring between 20,000 and 1,50,000 square metres from obtaining prior environment clearance, saying it suffers from legal infirmity. The MoEF, in an amendment notification published on December 9, 2016, exempted buildings and construction projects from the process of environment impact assessment (EIA) and prior environmental clearance. For smaller projects (less than 20,000 sq metres), it has a "self-declaration" clause, which will ensure issuance of permission from urban local bodies. For larger projects of more than 20,000 sq m in size, the green clearance and building permission will be given by urban local bodies simultaneously in an "integrated format". Quashing the provision in the notification which relates to the exclusion of "consent to operate" and "consent to establish" under the Water Act and the Air Act, the

Alpha Centauri may have mini Earths-like planets: study

Alpha Centauri - the closest star system to our planet - may be home to small, rocky Earth-like worlds that have been previously overlooked, according to a study. Astronomers at Yale University in the US have taken a fresh look at Alpha Centauri star system and found new ways to narrow the search for habitable planets there. The study, published in the Astronomical Journal, ruled out the existence of a number of larger planets in the system that had popped up in previous models. "The universe has told us the most common types of planets are small planets, and our study shows these are exactly the ones that are most likely to be orbiting Alpha Centauri A and B," said Professor Debra Fischer. The Alpha Centauri system is located 1.3 parsecs (24.9 trillion miles) from Earth, making it our closest neighbouring system. It has three stars: Centauri A, Centauri B, and Proxima Centauri. Last year, the discovery of an Earth-like planet orbiting Proxima Centauri set off a new wave
