UN chief Antonio Guterres urges G20 to use power to ease global suffering

The G20 nations hold enormous potential to ease suffering and set the world on a more peaceful course, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said, urging the bloc to lead the action required. Guterres made the remarks at a media briefing shortly after arriving in Johannesburg on Friday to participate in the G20 Leaders' Summit for the next two days. My message to G20 leaders over the next two days is simple. Now is the time for leadership and vision, Guterres said as he cited conflicts, climate chaos, economic uncertainty, inequality and a collapse in global aid as causes of inflicting massive suffering around the world. He added that rising military spending is drawing resources away from development. "As the world's largest economies, the G20 nations can hold enormous influence to ease suffering, ensure that economic growth is widely shared, and set our world on a better, more peaceful course for the future," he said. Guterres said that during the Summit, he would call on G2

S Africa refuses to hand over G20 baton to junior official amid US spat

South Africa has decided not to hand over the annual G20 Presidency to a junior US official at the end of the leaders' summit, even as a White House official cautions Cyril Ramaphosa over running his mouth against the US and President Donald Trump. South African President Ramaphosa adopted a reconciliatory approach on Thursday evening after the US requested accreditation for an eight-member team led by US charg d'affaires, Marc Dillard, to receive the baton on Sunday. However, late on Thursday evening, Ramaphosa's spokesman, Vincent Magwenya, posted a message on social media, saying the president will not hand over the G20 Presidency to a junior official. The President will not hand over to a charg d'affaires. It's a breach of established protocol. No head of state and government anywhere in the world would do it, Magwenya told local media. There was also anger in South Africa about remarks by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, which analysts said was a breach of protoco

US to attend but not participate in deliberations at G20 in South Africa

The US will attend only the closing ceremony of this weekend's G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg, but will not participate in any deliberations, the US confirmed in a statement late on Thursday. South Africa will hand over the annual Presidency of the G20 to the US on Sunday, and had indicated that it would do so ceremonially to an empty chair after repeated threats by US President Donald Trump that there would be no representation from the US. The US announcement followed some tough talk earlier on Thursday, where South African President Cyril Ramaphosa took several swipes at Trump without naming him specifically. It cannot be that a country's geographical location or income level or army determines who has a voice and who is spoken down to. It basically means that there should be no bullying of one nation by another nation we are all equal, Ramaphosa said to huge applause from the delegates at the G20 Social Summit. By early evening, Ramaphosa was more conciliatory as he ...

South Africa calls Trump's G20 Summit boycott an 'imperialist act'

The South African government and the ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Sunday reacted angrily to US President Donald Trump's decision to boycott the G20 Summit scheduled to take place in a fortnight in Johannesburg. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula lashed out at both Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who repeated the allegations made by Trump. Mbalula called the statements by the two US leaders false, labelling them as imperialist interference. Trump announced on Friday that no US official would participate in the Summit, which is being hosted by South Africa as it prepares to hand over the annual Presidency to the US. Trump cited the alleged persecution of white Afrikaner farmers in South Africa as the reason for his decision. This allegation has been denied and disproved repeatedly by both the South African government and leaders within the white community itself. It is a total disgrace that the G20 will be held in South Africa. Afrikaners are being killed

US to boycott G20 in South Africa over white farmers issue, says Trump

President Donald Trump said Friday that no US government officials would be attending the Group of 20 summit this year in South Africa, citing the country's treatment of white farmers. Trump had already announced he would not attend the annual summit for heads of state from the globe's leading and emerging economies. Vice President JD Vance had been scheduled to attend in Trump's place, but a person familiar with Vance's plans who was granted anonymity to talk about his schedule said Vance would no longer travel there for the summit. It is a total disgrace that the G20 will be held in South Africa, Trump said on his social media site. In his post, Trump cited abuses of Afrikaners, including violence and death as well as confiscation of their land and farms. The Trump administration has long accused the South African government of allowing minority white Afrikaner farmers to be persecuted and attacked. As it restricted the number of refugees admitted annually to the US to 7,500, the
