Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday claimed his state was demanding water in the same quantity and ratio as earlier and slammed the AAP-led Punjab government for playing politics over the water-sharing issue. His remarks came just hours before the start of an all-party meeting at 2 pm convened by Haryana government Haryana to discuss the row over Punjab refusing to release more water to the BJP-ruled neighbouring state. Opposition raises concerns over mounting debt in Haryana assembly

Opposition Congress and INLD MLAs in Haryana on Thursday expressed concern over the mounting debt as they also raised issues related to health, education and drug menace in the State Assembly. Participating in the discussion on the state budget in the State Assembly, Congress MLA from Kaithal, Aditya Surjewala said while the budget talks about making the state future-capable, in reality it lacks vision. He claimed there were a few proposals in the budget like the one to set up a flower market in Gurugram which were "recycled schemes" announced earlier. The construction of an international-level Aravalli Jungle Safari on 10,000 acres of land in Gurugram and Nuh districts is also an old scheme, Surjewala said. Surjewala and many other Congress members expressed deep concern over mounting debt. "The state is under deep debt. In 2014-15, the debt stood at Rs 60,293 crore which rose to Rs 3.92 lakh crore now, a 600 per cent increase. On average there is an increase of Rs 73 crore debt

Stubble burning: SC asks CAQM to hold meeting with Punjab, Haryana, UP

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Commission for Air Quality Management to hold a meeting with Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh governments on the proposed action plans to tackle the issue of stubble burning. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan asked CAQM to consult the states and come out with its own views on the issue and submit suggestions by March 17. Senior advocate Rahul Mehra, representing the Punjab government, submitted farmers need to be convinced that crop diversification was a viable option. "There is a minimum support price (MSP) that has to be given and minimum assured procurement. In paddy produce 100 per cent produce is assured that it will be picked up by the Food Corporation of India -- which undertakes paddy cultivation. For maize and others, that procurement policy is not there," he said. Punjab advocate general Gurminder Singh said the state government supported steps for eradicating stubble burning but other factors that added to pollutio

"I am the son of a poor farmer. I know the problems farmers face... I have done farming myself. I want to thank the prime minister, who in the past 10 years took several steps to empower the farmers," Saini said. A large number of farmers have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces.
