Ajay Chautala escapes unhurt in road mishap

Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) patron Ajay Singh Chautala had a fortunate escape on Tuesday after his car's rear tyre came off and the vehicle jumped onto a divider here, a party spokesman said. Ajay Chautala and JJP's state unit chief Nishan Singh were on their way to Jind from Narwana when the mishap took place, he said. The car, which was moving at a slow speed, jumped onto a divider after its rear tyre came off, the spokesman said, adding that no one was injured in the mishap. The JJP was formed last month after a split in the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) following a bitter power struggle between Ajay Chautala and Abhay Singh Chautala.

Maha police academy conducts 116th passing out parade

The 116th passing out parade of police sub-inspectors was held Tuesday at the Maharashtra Police Academy (MPA) in Nashik. A total of 177 cadets, including 145 men officers, 7 women officers and 25 jawans of Marine Police, passed out in the 116th batch after completing the nine-month training. Speaking at the occasion, Maharashtra DGP Datta Padsalgikar appealed to the fresher police sub-inspectors to work for the society, a government release stated. "Police should provide good service and secure the country and work as servants of the people," the Director General of Police said after taking the salute. Chaitali Gapat was adjudged the best cadet and given the sword of honour and other awards by the top cop.

Invite to literary meet cancelled due to political pressure: Nayantara Sahgal

Renowned author Nayantara Sahgal was invited to inaugurate the "Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan" in Mumbai but the invite was suddenly cancelled, prompting her to allege that the organisers did so under political pressure. "It is only obvious because the organisers of the event are aware of my views, my writings and my concerns, which I have been talking about openly, and they had invited me with great happiness. "I was all set to go for the event but I received a brief three-four line letter from the organisers on January 6, saying they were cancelling the invitation," the author, who was at the forefront of the "award wapsi" campaign, said on Tuesday. Central Zoo Authority advised all zoos be alert, take action in view of avian influenza, RS told

In view of confirmation of H5N1 Avian Influenza among domestic birds in Odisha's Puri district, Bihar's Munger district and peafowls in Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in Patna, the Central Zoo Authority has issued advisory to all the zoos to be alert and to take action in the matter, the Rajya Sabha was informed Monday. Union Minister of State for Environment Mahesh Sharma said this in reply to a question whether some zoos in the country have decided to stop procurement of poultry meat and replaced it with additional quantities of beef and eggs to feed animals following the outbreak of bird flu in some states. He said the establishment and operation/management of the zoo including dietary changes, if any, is the responsibility of the respective zoo operator. The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) has catalogued and preserved the collection of BJP ideologue Syama Prasad Mookerjee papers in the archives.The papers of RSS' founding chief Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar are preserved with the Microfilm Division of the NMML and have not been catalogued.This information was given by Minister of State for Culture (Independent Charge) Mahesh Sharma in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Monday.Giving details, he said the scanning of Mookerjee papers has been completed while the papers of Savarkar and Hedgewar have not been digitised.Mookerjee was the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the parent organisation of the BJP.

Engineers, workers at Polavaram project set Guinness record

: Setting a Guinness World record, engineers and workers at the Polavaram multipurpose project poured 32,315.5 cubic meters of concrete for the spillway in a 24-hour marathon effort that ended Monday. Representatives of the Guinness World Records, who witnessed the event, declared it a new world record and handed over the certificate to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at a function at the project site this evening. The concrete-filling marathon exercise, which Naidu termed a 'historic moment', was carried out for 24 hours at a stretch from 8 AM on Sunday. In the process, the record set by Dubai in May 2017 wherein 21,580 cubic meters of concrete was poured for the construction of the Al-Rashid tower was broken. Thousands of white-robed devotees of the Shembe Church in South Africa greeted the New Year last week by climbing the mountain of Nhlangakazi, sacred to them for more than a century. Every New Year, people mostly from Inanda township, near the coastal city of Durban, trek barefoot about 80 kilometres (50 miles) and set up camp at the foot of the peak. They believe that on its heights, itinerant preacher Isaiah Shembe received divine instructions to found the church. Created in 1913 and also known as the Nazareth Baptist Church, the institution is one of the largest African traditionalist churches, combining Christianity with the Zulu culture.
