BCCI's Committee of Administrators (CoA) member Diana Edulji has decided against accepting the Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, announced by the BCCI on Saturday.

2,655 candidates left in fray for May 12 Karna assembly polls

A total of 2,655 candidates are left in the fray for the May 12 assembly polls in Karnataka. Out of 2,655 candidates, 2,436 are men and 219 women, a statement from the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office said, a day after the last date for withdrawal of candidature. A total of 2,948 candidates had contested the 2013 polls. It said the contesting candidates include 224 from" BJP, 222 from Congress and 201 from JD(S). Others are BSP 18, CPI 2, CPIM 19, NCP 14, registered unrecognised parties 800 and independants 1,155. The process of filing of nominations had begun with the"issual of gazette notification on April 17. While, the last"date for filing of nominations was April 24, scrutiny was on April 25. The CEO office said there were 3,509 nominated" candidates without duplicates. Mulabagilu had highest"nomination of 61 while the lowest nomination of four was in Challakere. It said 271 nominations had been rejected. The highest rejections of eight each were in Shantinagar .

UPSC exam qualifier from JK asks stone-pelters to give peace a chance

Abhishek Sharma, one of the 15 candidates from Jammu and Kashmir who qualified the prestigious civil services 2017 examination has a word of advice for the state's stone-pelting youths -- give peace a chance. Sharma, who secured 69th rank in the coveted examination whose results were announced yesterday, appealed to the youth to shun violence and work for betterment of the state and the country. "My request to the stone-pelting youth is to bring positivity in their lives...We are second to none and given a peaceful atmosphere, we can take the state and the country to new heights," Sharma said. The Australian Olympic Committee today awarded a posthumous Order of Merit to Peter Norman, a record-holding sprinter who supported two Americans in their famous Black Power salute at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Bridegroom among 6 killed in car-truck crash in MP

Six people, including four minor girls, were killed and two others injured when a speeding truck collided with a car carrying a marriage party near here, a police official said today. The bridegroom and the car driver were among those killed in the mishap which took place last night near Narora village in the district, he said. The speeding truck rammed into the car from front and then overturned on it, killing six people, including the bridegroom, on the spot, said Maihar Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Arvind Tiwari. The groom was identified as Brimohan Kol (22), he said. The marriage party was heading to Amilia village where Kol's wedding was arranged, Tiwari said. Two girls were seriously injured in the mishap and admitted in a hospital for treatment, the officer said.
