The last rites of CRPF jawan Lakshman, who was killed in a Maoist attack, were performed today in Rajasthan's Alwar district. Nine CRPF personnel were yesterday killed after Maoists blasted their mine protected vehicle using over 50 kgs of explosives in Chhattisgarh's Sukma, about a year after a dozen jawans were killed in a similar ambush in the district. The mortal remains of Lakshman were cremated with full state honour at Sundarwadi village, SP Alwar Rahul Prakash said. MP Karan Singh Yadav, minister Hem Singh Bhadana, CRPF DIG Jagdish Meena and senior police officials were present in the funeral.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has seen a sharp growth in West Bengal in the last few years, a senior RSS leader claimed today. "The number of RSS 'shakas' (daily meetings at local level) in entire Bengal area has gone up to 1,279 till February 2018 from 750 in 2013," RSS general secretary (South Bengal) Jishnu Basu said. In a bid to "combat rising radicalism and fundamentalism" in the state, the RSS is focusing on increasing its strength and presence here, said a senior RSS functionary. According to Basu, the RSS started gaining significance in West Bengal in 2013 during the celebration of Swami Vivekananda's 150th birth anniversary. Since then, the organisation has been growing in the state, as more and more people are getting connected with it, he said. "Apart from 'Shakas', there has also been an increase in weekly meetings and monthly meetings," he said.

Twenty-three Indian nationals were today arrested in Sri Lanka for allegedly working in the country while on tourist visas. The Department of Immigration and Emigration said nine of the arrested suspects had been engaged in astrology while nine others were into the sale of textiles, the NewsRadio reported. Five other suspects had been engaged in carpentry. A senior official said the immigration department will take steps to seize the 23 Indians' passports and carry out further investigations.
