Lt Col Thapa laid to rest with full honours
Mortal remains of an Army officer, who had the unique distinction of being awarded a Yuddh Sewa Medal as a second lieutenant for his gallant action against the Pakistani soldiers in Siachen Glacier in 1989, were today laid to rest in Dharamsala, officials said. Hundreds of people with moist eyes joined the funeral ceremony of Lt Col Deepak Thapa, who had breathed his last on March 8, after battling cancer for more than a year in Army's super speciality Research & Referral Hospital here, a senior official said. "The officer had the unique distinction of being awarded with a Yudh Sewa Medal as a second lieutenant for his gallant action against the Pakistani soldiers in the inhospitable Siachen Glacier in 1989. "The area of action was rechristened as 'Thapa base' in his name, which till date serves as a source of motivation for all young soldiers and officers alike," he said. Several dignitaries and Army officers paid tribute by laying wreaths during a ceremony organised in Himachal .
B'desh President winds up 3-day tour to Assam, Meghalaya
Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid wound up his three-day tour to Assam and Meghalaya and left for New Delhi this afternoon. Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal saw him off at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport. Hamid said that relations between neighbours is very important for development and invited Governor Mukhi and Chief Minister Sonowal to visit Bangladesh. Their visit to Bangladesh would bolster the same, he said adding peace and tranquillity in the region would lead to faster development. The visit to Assam and Meghalaya was ''very nostalgic'' for him as during the Bangladesh War of Liberation he had been to this part of the North East. Woman vandalises fortune teller's stall after defying his death prediction
An elderly woman in China today vandalised the stall of a fortune teller who wrongly predicted her death, according to a media report. The fortune-teller told the 70-year-old womanin Mianyang in southwestern Sichuan province in March last year that she would not live to see 2018. The woman, identified only as Wang, then spent the year in fear and prepared for her death, Hong Kong based South China Morning Post reported. I was terrified when the fortune-teller told me I wouldn't be able to live till the end of last year. I worried every day, Wang was quoted as saying. But she remained in good health, despite the fears. When Wang ran into the fortune-teller in the park this week, she took her anger out on his stall. A police officer intervened and asked the fortune-teller to apologise to Wang for causing stress. Fortune-telling is a popular profession in China, with predictions usually based on people's names, time of birth, Chinese zodiac signs, facial features and palms.
Sherman Alexie declines literary award
Sherman Alexie has declined the Carnegie Medal he received last month, the American Library Association said. Alexie was given the USD 5,000 award for nonfiction for his memoir "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me." He has since faced multiple allegations of sexual harassment and issued a statement acknowledging wrongdoing. Jay Asher and James Dashner are among other writers who recently faced similar allegations. The library association did not have immediate comment on whether the decision was solely by Alexie or whether he had been urged to turn the award down. Attempts to reach Alexie on Friday were not immediately successfully. His publisher, Hachette Book Group, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A woman from Hyderabad thanked the External Affairs Minister (EAM), Sushma Swaraj, on Friday after she was rescued from Oman, where she was allegedly being forced to work as a housekeeper in three houses.Reshma, the rescued victim, told ANI that she and her daughter Niloufer Shaik were sent to Dubai on the pretext of a good job by an agent, but after reaching, Reshma was sent to Oman."We left for Dubai on 28 December 2017.
