As movements like #MeToo and Time's up take up the front row at the 90th Academy Awards, many celebrities have donned orange pins on the red carpet to advocate for gun safety.According to people.com, the 'Wear Orange to Prevent Gun Violence' pins from the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety were being worn in an effort to raise awareness about gun safety.The move comes just two weeks after a school shooting in Florida claimed lives of 17 students.Following the shooting on February 14, many celebrities donated to the "March for Our Lives" campaign calling for gun control.A few celebrities also wore orange on National Gun Violence Awareness Day last year and spoke out against gun violence on social media.This awards' season has already seen various celebrities staging protests, attendees at the Golden Globes wearing all-black in support of Time's Up.

Cat brought from Gulf detained at Kochi airport

A pet cat brought from a Gulf country was detained at the International Airport here as it was not the recommended route for it to travel, a top Customs official said here today. An Indian couple travelling from Jeddah on March 2 on Saudia Airlines had brought the cat along with them. The animal was seized and detained by the Customs sleuths as it was not a recognised route for importing the pets, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar told PTI here. The official said Saudia Airlines was asked to send the cat back to Jeddah as the couple had not carried documents necessary for bringing a pet to India. "Import of pets is only allowed after production of required health certificate from the country of origin and examination by our animal quarantine office," he said. Besides, Kochi International Airport is not a route for bringing pets as it does not have a quarantine facility, the official said. Three adult leopards and two cubs were let loose in South Goa's Bondla zoo on Saturday, after some unknown persons opened their cages, forcing the zoo authorities to shut down the premises for a day, an official statement said on Saturday.

Man sets free four leopards from enclosure in Goa zoo

A zoo situated inside the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary had to be locked down for the day after an intruder set free four leopards from their enclosure in the early hours of today, zoo officials said. They informed that three adult leopards and a cub were set free forcing them to close the zoo so that visitors who would have arrived during the day were not harmed. He said that the enclosure, the gate of which was broken by the intruder, had five leopards inside, including two cubs, at the time of the incident. When the incident came to light, authorities closed the zoo gates and managed to track down two adult leopards- Mandu and Anajli- and a third one- Julie- a little while later, they informed. The cub which was set free was found loitering close to the enclosure and was also brought back, officials said. Officials said that a police complaint had been filed over the incident. The zoo, 80 kilometres from here, would be open for visitors tomorrow, the official added.

Literateur Prafulla Das passes away

Literateur Prafulla Das passed away today at his residence at Rajkanika in Kendrapara district, family sources said. He was 91. Das was a bachelor and was suffering from old age related ailments. He was a recipient of the prestigious "Sarala Award" for his achievement in the literary field. 'Banhimana', the biography of freedom fighter Malati Chaudhury, brought him the Sarala Award in 2014. Das had written a number of books on the history of India's freedom struggle and the role of Odisha. His books on struggles of peasants against kings and Zamindars had won accolades from various quarters. These include 'Kalapanira Angisikha', 'Agnujugar Aahwan', 'Bharatara Sasastra Mukti Sangram', 'Sahid Basu Bisnini', 'Kanika Prajaandolan Itihas', 'Netaji Aao feri Nahanti', 'Fashi Manchare Biplabi' and many more. The Odisha unit of CPI(M) condoled the death of Das and termed him as a "fighter" for the downtrodden.

Gadchiroli book reading event sets new Guinness world record

As many as 7,000 people today participated in a book reading event here and managed to break a Guinness world record set in Turkey in May last year, district officials said. The event was organised by police authorities here and had representatives from the Guinness Book of World Records in attendance, officials added. The event in Turkey on May 18, 2017 had seen the participation of 5,754 people as audience for a book reading event. "Gadchiroli is mostly known for Naxal violence but this event will create a positive image for the district across the world. We wanted to propagate the message of non-violence and ensured maximum participation of school students. We are proud that we managed to set this world record," said Maheshwar Reddy, Superintendent of Police, Gadchiroli.
