Torrent begins pilot project for blending green hydrogen with natural gas

Torrent Power on Monday said it is working on a pilot project for blending green hydrogen with natural gas in the city gas distribution (CGD) network. The pilot project underway in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, is expected to complete in 8 months, the company said in a statement. "Torrent Power is implementing a green hydrogen pilot project for blending in the CGD network. The pilot project based on alkaline electrolyser will blend 2.5 per cent green hydrogen (GH2) into CGD network, marking an important milestone in the company's foray into GH2 business in India," it said. GH2 is produced using electrolysis of water powered by renewable sources. Its blending with the existing natural gas supply allows for a gradual transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix. Torrent Power is one of the largest companies in the country's power sector, with a presence across the entire power value chain -- generation, transmission and distribution.

IIT-Guwahati develops catalyst to produce sustainable green hydrogen fuel

Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Guwahati have developed a catalyst that can produce sustainable green hydrogen fuel from wood alcohol with no carbon dioxide as a byproduct, according to officials. The easy and environmentally safe process also produces formic acid which is a useful industrial chemical. This makes methanol a promising Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) and contributes to the concept of hydrogen-methanol economy, the officials said. The research has been published in journal ACS Catalysis. Akshai Kumar AS, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT-Guwahati said the world is moving towards finding alternatives to fossil fuels, and hydrogen gas continues to be the best source of clean energy generation. "Currently, hydrogen is produced either by the electrochemical splitting of water or from bio-derived chemicals such as alcohol. In the latter method, hydrogen is typically produced from methyl alcohol (commonly called wood alcohol) using

Green hydrogen company Ohmium raises $250 mn to help address climate change

In what could prove a milestone for an industry that hopes to help address climate change, the Silicon Valley company Ohmium announced Wednesday it has raised $250 million to increase production of machines that can make clean hydrogen and displace fossil fuels. Some climate experts say burning hydrogen can substitute for burning coal, oil or gas, for example in making steel or cement without contributing to climate change. That's been largely theoretical, but real world examples are now growing. Just four or five years ago, a company working on clean hydrogen from water would not have been able to raise several hundred million dollars, said Daryl Wilson, executive director of the Hydrogen Council. But now there's rapid growth and demand for it, and a broader recognition that it's key to addressing climate change, he said. Mark Viehman, a hydrogen and clean fuels expert at the consulting firm Capgemini, called $250 million a very impressive fundraise, and said its own recent resear

France's TotalEnergies puts hydrogen partnership with Adani on hold

France's TotalEnergies, one of the largest foreign investors in billionare Gautam Adani's business empire, said it has put on hold participation in Indian conglomerate's USD 50 billion hydrogen project pending results of an audit launched following allegations by a US short-seller. While the partnership with Adani group was announced in June last year, TotalEnergies has not yet signed a contract, the French group's chief executive Patrick Pouyanne said at earnings call. As per the June 2022 announcement, TotalEnergies was to take 25 per cent equity in Adani New Industries Ltd (ANIL) - the Adani Group firm that is investing USD 50 billion over 10 years in green hydrogen ecosystem that includes an initial production capacity of 1 million tonnes before 2030. "Obviously, the hydrogen project will be put on hold until we have clarity," Pouyanne said. Green hydrogen crucial for economic development, energy security: Survey

Green hydrogen will be crucial for India's economic development, energy security and achieving decarbonisation of harder to abate sectors, according to the Economic Survey 2022-23. The survey tabled in the Parliament on Tuesday stated that from the emerging global momentum on green hydrogen, India can situate this decarbonisation opportunity not just within the context of a low-carbon economy but also as an enabler of energy security and economic development for the nation. Green hydrogen will be crucial for achieving decarbonisation of harder-to-abate sectors such as fertilisers, refining, methanol, maritime shipping, iron & steel and long-haul transport, the survey said. Further, the survey said that green hydrogen is also an important element of India's Long Term Low Emissions Development Strategy (LT-LEDS). With a vision to make India an energy-independent nation, and to de-carbonise critical sectors, the government approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission on January 4, ...
