France's TotalEnergies, one of the largest foreign investors in billionare Gautam Adani's business empire, said it has put on hold participation in Indian conglomerate's USD 50 billion hydrogen project pending results of an audit launched following allegations by a US short-seller. While the partnership with Adani group was announced in June last year, TotalEnergies has not yet signed a contract, the French group's chief executive Patrick Pouyanne said at earnings call. As per the June 2022 announcement, TotalEnergies was to take 25 per cent equity in Adani New Industries Ltd (ANIL) - the Adani Group firm that is investing USD 50 billion over 10 years in green hydrogen ecosystem that includes an initial production capacity of 1 million tonnes before 2030. "Obviously, the hydrogen project will be put on hold until we have clarity," Pouyanne said. Union New and Renewable Energy Minister R K Singh on Thursday said his ministry will come out with detailed guidelines and standards for making India a global hub for hydrogen manufacturing. The comment comes a day after the Union Cabinet approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore. "We will come out with a detailed order after clearance by the Cabinet," Singh said during a media interaction. The Mission is expected to attract Rs 8 lakh crore of investment to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per annum in the next five years. The incentives provided under the Mission are aimed at bringing down the cost of green hydrogen. "We have decided that electrolysers can be made in India. So, we have worked out the PLI (production linked incentive) scheme for their domestic manufacturing that will cover manufacture of 15 gigawatts (GW) capacity. But we expect the capacity to be established to be almost in the region of 60 GW (by 2030)," he added.
State-owned power giant NTPC on Tuesday said it has started India's first green hydrogen blending operation in the PNG (piped natural gas) network of its township in Kawas, Surat. "The project is a joint effort of NTPC and Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL). The first molecule of green hydrogen from the project was set in motion by P Ram Prasad, Head of Project, Kawas, in presence of other senior executives of NTPC Kawas and GGL," a company statement said. The green hydrogen blending has been started in the piped natural gas (PNG) network of NTPC Kawas township in Surat, it added. After the start of the blending operation, NTPC Kawas held awareness workshops for township residents with the help of GGL officials. NTPC and GGL have worked relentlessly towards achieving this milestone in record time after the foundation stone laying by the Prime Minister on July 30, 2022. A truck laden with hydrogen cylinders overturned and caught fire on Manmad-Malegaon road in Maharashtra's Nashik district on Saturday, police said. There were no casualties in the accident that took place near Manmad in the afternoon, an official said. One of the front tyres of the truck, which was carrying 200 hydrogen gas cylinders, burst near Kandagaon Phata. The driver lost control of the wheel and the vehicle turned turtle, he said. The cylinders in the truck caught fire and started exploding one after another. The vehicle was completely gutted, the official said. There was panic in the area as the cylinders started exploding. Teams from the police, fire brigade and other agencies reached the spot, but couldn't go near the vehicle because of the blasts, he said. The police stopped vehicular traffic on the road up to 2 km, the official said, adding that the blaze was doused after three to four hours.
