New York City has filed a lawsuit against Hyundai and Kia, joining a host of other cities beset by a social media fuelled wave of car thefts due to a flaw that made some car models highly susceptible to theft. The reason is that some models sold by Hyundai and Kia in the US came without engine immobilisers, a standard feature on most cars since the 1990s that prevent the engine from starting unless the key is present. The lawsuit, which was filed with the US District Court in the Southern District of New York late Tuesday, alleges that Hyundai Motor America and Kia America Inc failed to keep up with other automakers by not adopting immobiliser technology that ensured car ignitions could not be started without their keys. Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) on Thursday reported 16.26 per cent rise in total sales at 59,601 units in May as compared to the same month last year. The company had posted a total sales of 51,263 units in May 2022, HMIL said in a statement. Domestic sales grew 14.91 per cent at 48,601 units as compared to 42,293 units in the year-ago month, it added. Exports were at 11,000 units last month as against 8,970 units in the same period a year ago, up 22.63 per cent. HMIL COO Tarun Garg said the company's double-digit sales growth in May was fuelled by its SUVs Creta and Venue. The recently launched all-new Verna sedan also received good response, he added.

Hyundai Motor India on Monday said its total sales increased by 3.5 per cent to 58,201 units in April. The automaker had dispatched 56,201 units in April 2022. The company's domestic wholesales last month rose by 13 per cent to 49,701 units as compared with 44,001 units in the year-ago period. Exports, however, declined to 8,500 units last month from 12,200 units in April 2022. "This strong growth has been backed by an overwhelming response to the recently launched all-new Verna that has more than doubled its volumes from its earlier version," Hyundai Motor India COO Tarun Garg said in a statement. The automaker looks to carry forward this momentum with a soon-to-be-launched SUV, Hyundai Exter, he added.

Passenger vehicle leaders Maruti Suzuki India and Hyundai Motor saw their market share dip in FY23 as compared with FY22 as they struggled with shortage of electronic components, according to automobile dealers' body FADA. It had retailed 12,39,688 units in 2021-22 and grabbed a market share of 42.13 per cent. Earlier, the auto major had stated that it faced shortage of electronic components last fiscal with an order backlog of around 3.8 lakh units. Similarly, Hyundai Motor India saw an increase in retail sales at 5,25,088 units last fiscal, however its market share dropped to 14.51 per cent. It had sold 4,79,027 units
