Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has formed a high-level committee, headed by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto, to decide on the national cricket team's participation in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. The committee will explore and discuss all aspects of Pakistan and India relations, the government's policy of keeping sports and policy apart, and the situation in India for the players, officials, fans, and media before submitting its recommendations to Sharif. The Prime Minister is also the patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board. Both the International Cricket Council and host BCCI have already announced the World Cup schedule and expect Pakistan to travel to India for the 50-over showpiece beginning October 5. The PCB, however, has conveyed to them that the national team's participation in the premier event is subject to government clearance due to the tense relations between the two countries. Other committee members include Sports Minister Ahsan Mazari, Maryam ...

An inspirational Netherlands scripted an incredible come-from-behind fairytale, riding on all-rounder Bas de Leede's individual brilliance as they beat Scotland by four wickets to join Sri Lanka as the second qualifying team for the ICC World Cup in India, starting October 5. Needing 278 inside 44 overs to qualify, De Leede's power-packed 123 off 92 balls with help of seven fours and five sixes and his 113-run sixth-wicket stand in just 11.3 overs with Saqib Zulfiqar (33 not out) helped Netherlands to qualify in just 42.5 overs. This is the fifth time that the Netherlands have qualified for the 50-over global event, having played in the 1996, 2003, 2007 and 2011 editions. "Little bit lost for words. I thought what Bas de Leede and Saqib Zulfiqar did in the last 10 overs was unbelievable to watch," an emotional Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards said after the match. "This group is just incredible. We put in the hard work and the guys just enjoy everyone's success. We had a different
Pakistan captain Babar Azam on Thursday asserted that his team is focussed on winning the ODI World Cup in India and not just beating the arch-rivals in the much-awaited clash in Ahmedabad on October 15. Pakistan are expected to travel to India for the ICC event though their participation is subject to government clearance. "We are not thinking only about playing and winning against India in the World Cup. We are looking at doing well in every match if we are to win the ICC title. "We are going to play the World Cup, not just India in India," said Babar. He also said that the rumblings in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will not have any bearing on the national team's performance in the ICC World Cup, or in the assignments prior to that. When asked if the recent changes in the PCB leadership and selection committee had affected the players, Babar said their work is to focus on cricket. "We don't focus on what is happening in the PCB. We just focus on cricket. We have the entire
Pakistan's marquee October 15 clash against arch-rivals India in Ahmedabad might be huge from perspective of fans on both sides of the border but it is certainly not the "be all and end all" from cricketing point of view, reckons Team Director and head coach Mickey Arthur. Arthur understands the hype surrounding the clash but for him, it will be like any other game where one would gain or lose two points. "I don't think Pakistan and India is the be all of the World Cup," Arthur told a Pakistani YouTube channel 'Cricket Baaz'. "From a fan's perspective, from the viewpoint of the emotions and relations between the two countries, one can understand the interest it generates and emotions that go with it. But from a cricket point of view I think it will be about doing well against all teams if you want to win the World Cup," the South African added. Arthur was intent on playing down the pressure quotient and in fact has already started the mental games stating that pressure would be on
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, seeking official clearance to travel to India for the ODI World Cup in October-November, according to a report. In the letter, also addressed to the interior and the foreign ministry, the PCB has asked for advice on whether the national team is allowed to travel to India, and if so, if there are any reservations about any of the five venues for the Pakistan games, according to 'Espncricinfo.com'. "Soon after the World Cup schedule was announced last Tuesday, we wrote to our Patron, Honourable Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, through the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ministry, copying the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Interior, requesting clearance to participate in the World Cup," the PCB told the website. "The decision to visit India and approve venues at which we can play our matches is the prerogative of the Government of Pakistan. We have absolute trust in the judgment of ou
Pakistan is set to send a security delegation to India for inspecting the venues before giving clearance for the national team's travel to the neighbouring country for this year's ICC ODI World Cup. An official source in the Inter-Provincial Coordination (Sports) Ministry said that the government, including the foreign and interior ministry would decide when to send the security delegation to India once the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board was elected after the Eid holidays. "The security delegation will go with representation from the PCB to inspect the venues where Pakistan will play and also the security and other arrangements made for them in the World Cup," he said. He said the delegation would visit Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Ahmedabad, the venue for the marque India-Pakistan match on October 15. "Before any tour to India it is standard practice for the cricket board to seek permission from the government which normally sends a delegation to India,"

Zimbabwe who have won six matches back-to-back, will be targeting two points as well as their longest winning streak in ODI history as they face Oman in super six opener
In super six, the teams from group A will play against the three teams from group B and West Indies would not only have to win all their matches but hope for many more permutations and combinations
The Arun Jaitley Stadium will be undergoing a major renovation, worth Rs 20 to 25 crore, for the five matches it hosts during the ODI World Cup in October-November. The venue, which hosted the second Test between India and Australia earlier this year, had copped criticism for not ensuring basic hygiene in the stadium premises, especially in the washrooms. In April, it was revealed that Delhi was among the five venues in the country that needed a major revamp, following a Gap assessment from the Indian cricket board (BCCI). A gap assessment outlines the existing gaps between the current and ideal future state of an organisation. The others were Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Mohali, which doesn't feature among the 10 World Cup venues chosen on Tuesday. The game's popularity in India has skyrocketed in the past 10 years with the BCCI making billions from broadcast rights. However, the fans are often neglected with most stadiums in India lacking basic facilities. Rajan Manchanda, joi

The officials of major cricket centres, which have not been allocated an ODI World Cup matches, have expressed their disappointment at missing out on an opportunity to host games of the ICC event in October-November. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and host BCCI announced the World Cup schedule on Tuesday, finalising 10 venues for the event beginning October 5. The established cricket centres that have missed out include Mohali, Indore, Rajkot, Ranchi and Nagpur. The chosen venues include Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata. The metro cities usually get to host the World Cup games and apart from that, the matches are allocated zone wise and in some cases personal preferences come into play. Though it is an ICC event, the world body tends to go with venues proposed by the local organising committee, which is the BCCI in this case. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is still apprehensive about sending its team to India for the ODI World Cup but International Cricket Council (ICC) is "confident" that the Babar Azam-led team will compete in the 50-over showpiece. The ICC on Tuesday announced the fixtures for the October 5-November 19 tournament and rejected PCB's request to not schedule their matches in Chennai and Bengaluru against specific teams. PCB did not want to play Afghanistan on spin-friendly track in Chennai and also wanted to avoid facing Australia in Benglauru. As part of the announcement in Mumbai, it was confirmed that Pakistan will lock horns with India in Ahmedabad on October 15 and take on Australia (October 20) and Afghanistan (October 23) at pre-decided venues. Soon after the announcement, the PCB made it clear that its participation in the ODI World Cup will be subject to government clearance. "Our participation in the World Cup and us playing in Ahmedabad on October 15 or in Mumbai if we qua
All of the objections raised by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on the schedule and venues for the national team team in the ODI World Cup in India have been rejected by the International Cricket Council (ICC). In the final schedule of the World Cup released on Tuesday by the ICC and BCCI, Pakistan's match against India is scheduled in Ahmedabad as proposed in the draft earlier while PCB's request to switch venues for the matches against Afghanistan and Australia have been ignored. As per wishes of the Pakistan team management, the PCB had asked ICC and BCCI to reschedule its match against Afghanistan from Chennai to Bengaluru and the game against Australia from Bengaluru to Chennai. The Pakistan team management had concerns that given the Chepauk's history of helping spinners, it would leave the side at a disadvantage against Afghanistan, who have quality spinners. But none of Pakistan's objections or requests have been paid heed to and even the semi finals have been scheduled in
