India's external debt increases 10.7% to $717.9 billion at Dec-end

India's external debt increased by 10.7 per cent to USD 717.9 billion at the end of December 2024 from USD 648.7 billion in December 2023, as per the data released by the finance ministry. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, there is a 0.7 per cent increase in external debt from the level of USD 712.7 billion at the end of September 2024, according to India's Quarterly External Debt Report. The external debt to GDP ratio stood at 19.1 per cent at the end of December 2024, against 19 per cent in September 2024, it said. The valuation effect is due to the appreciation of the US dollar vis-a-vis the rupee and other major currencies, such as the yen, the euro and Special Drawing Rights (SDR), amounting to USD 12.7 billion during the quarter ended December 2024, the report said. Excluding the valuation effect, the increase in external debt would have been USD 17.9 billion quarter-on-quarter against USD 5.2 billion at the end of December 2024 over September 2024, it added. External debt rises to $711.8 billion as of Sep, 4.3% up from June: FinMin

India's external debt rose to USD 711.8 billion as of September this year, up 4.3 per cent over June 2024, as per the data released by the Finance Ministry. At the end of September 2023, the external debt stood at USD 637.1 billion. In September 2024, India's external debt was placed at USD 711.8 billion, recording an increase of USD 29.6 billion over its level at June-end 2024, India's Quarterly External Debt Report said. The external debt to GDP ratio stood at 19.4 per cent in September 2024 against 18.8 per cent as of June 2024, it added. "The US dollar-denominated debt remained the largest component of India's external debt with a share of 53.4 per cent at end-September 2024, followed by Indian Rupee (31.2 per cent), Japanese Yen (6.6 per cent), SDR (5.0 per cent) and Euro (3.0 per cent)," it said. India's total external debt has increased by USD 31 billion to USD 646.79 billion in 2023, according to World Bank International Debt Report. The report further said that interest payment increased from USD 15.08 billion in 2022 to USD 22.54 billion in 2023. While the long-term debt stocks have risen 7 per cent to USD 498 billion in 2023, short-term debt stocks declined marginally to USD 126.32 billion in 2023. According to the report, external debt stock as percentage of exports was 80 per cent, while debt servicing was 10 per cent of exports in 2023. The World Bank International Debt Report, 2024, further said that net debt inflows during the year worked out to be USD 33.42 billion, while the net equity inflows was higher at USD 46.94 billion in 2023.

India's external debt rose marginally to USD 629.1 billion at June-end 2023, although the debt-GDP ratio declined, according to a Reserve Bank data released on Thursday. The debt rose by about USD 4.7 billion from USD 624.3 billion at March-end. "The external debt to GDP ratio declined to 18.6 per cent at end-June 2023 from 18.8 per cent at end-March 2023," RBI said. Valuation effect due to the appreciation of the US dollar vis--vis the major currencies such as yen and SDR amounted to USD 3.1 billion. US dollar-denominated debt remained the largest component of India's external debt, with a share of 54.4 per cent at end-June 2023, followed by debt denominated in the Indian rupee (30.4 per cent), SDR (5.9 per cent), yen (5.7 per cent), and the euro (3.0 per cent). Excluding the valuation effect, external debt would have increased by USD 7.8 billion instead of USD 4.7 billion at end-June 2023 over end-March 2023, the central bank said. India's external debt rose marginally to USD 624.7 billion annually at end-March 2023, although the debt-GDP ratio declined, as per a Reserve Bank data released on Friday. The external debt rose by USD 5.6 billion from USD 619.1 billion at end-March 2022. "The external debt to GDP ratio declined to 18.9 per cent at end-March 2023 from 20 per cent at end-March 2022," said the Reserve Bank's data on India's External Debt as at end-March 2023. Valuation gains due to the appreciation of the US dollar compared to the Indian rupee and major currencies such as yen, SDR, and euro were placed at USD 20.6 billion. "Excluding the valuation effect, external debt would have increased by USD 26.2 billion instead of USD 5.6 billion at end-March 2023 over end-March 2022," the central bank added. India's external debt stood at USD 610.5 billion in the second quarter of 2022-23, down by USD 2.3 billion from end-June 2022, the finance ministry said on Thursday. The external debt to GDP ratio stood at 19.2 per cent as at end-September 2022 as compared to 19.3 per cent at end-June. "At end-September 2022, India's external debt was placed at USD 610.5 billion, recording a decrease of USD 2.3 billion over its level at end-June 2022," it said. Valuation gains due to the appreciation of the US dollar vis--vis major currencies such as the euro, yen and Indian rupee was placed at USD 10.6 billion. India's external debt increased by USD 47.1 billion to USD 620.7 billion in the financial year ended March 2022, the Reserve Bank said on Thursday. However, the external debt to GDP ratio declined to 19.9 per cent at the end of March from 21.2 per cent at the end of March 2021. Valuation gains due to the appreciation of the US dollar as against Indian rupee and major currencies such as yen, euro and SDR were placed at USD 11.7 billion. "Excluding the valuation effect, external debt would have increased by USD 58.8 billion instead of USD 47.1 billion at end-March 2022 over end-March 2021," Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a statement.
