Pre-monsoon surveys find 256 dangerous buildings in Maharashtra's Raigad

A survey conducted by 11 municipal councils and five nagar panchayats in Raigad in Maharashtra ahead of the monsoon has found 256 dangerous buildings in the district, an official said on Thursday. Three municipal councils, namely Khalapur, Shrivardhan and Pali did not carry out surveys, he added. "The collector had ordered carrying out of such surveys. There are 50 dangerous buildings in Uran, 36 in Khopoli, 29 in Pen, 23 in Mahad and 17 in Alibag. A total of 73 buildings are in very dangerous condition," he said. "The most dangerous category includes 25 buildings in Alibag, 13 each in Mahad and Pen. Now, notices will be issued to those occupying such structures to save them from any untoward incident," he added. Incidentally, on August 24, 2020, a building collapse in Mahad in the district had killed 16 persons, leaving 45 households without shelter.

Private forecasting agency Skymet Weather Monday predicted a bleak monsoon in India over the next four weeks, raising concerns about the impact on agriculture. A cyclonic circulation which is set to develop into a low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea and intensify in the next two days is expected to critically influence the advance of the monsoon towards the Kerala coast, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday. The weather department, however, did not give a tentative date for the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala. "Westerly winds over the south Arabian Sea continue to prevail up to 2.1 km above mean sea level. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday reviewed the overall preparedness for flood management in the upcoming monsoon season and measures for formulating an overarching policy to mitigate the perennial problem of flooding in the country. Maha CM checks monsoon preparedness, asks for structural audit of buildings

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed all civic bodies in the state to conduct third-party structural audits of dangerous buildings by good engineering institutes instead of relying upon the audit reports obtained by housing societies. Heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds lashed parts of north and east India, including the national capital, on Saturday bringing relief from scorching heat but also claiming lives and leading to waterlogging and uprooting of trees.
