Alleging that the railways have become "totally parentless", West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday claimed that it was only keen on increasing fares and not improving passenger amenities. Banerjee was speaking to the press at the Kolkata airport on the way to Siliguri to take stock of the situation following the train accident near Rangapani in which several people were killed. At least 15 passengers died and 60 others were injured, after three rear coaches of the stationary Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express derailed on Monday morning as a goods train collided with it in West Bengal's Darjeeling district. "The chief minister is going to visit the accident spot in New Jalpaiguri to take stock of the relief operations," the official told PTI. The three rear compartments derailed under the impact of the collision from behind by the locomotive of the goods train near Rangapani station, about 30 km from North Bengal's New Jalpaiguri station, railway officials said.

A minor fire broke out in a third-ac coach of Daulatpur-Sabarmati express train near Khatipura station in Rajasthan's Jaipur on Friday. All passengers are safe and the train left after a delay of one hour, said North Western Railway spokesperson Captain Shashi Kiran. The exact cause of the fire, which broke out near the toilet, was not immediately known, he said. The spokesperson said that a passenger immediately pulled the chain and the coach attendant with the help of other passengers controlled the fire. The coach was detached and the passengers were shifted to other coaches, he said. The incident occurred between Khatipura and Jagatpura railway stations. The matter is being investigated.

State-owned RVNL on Wednesday said it has received an order worth around Rs 390 crore from the Indian Railways. The contract is for construction of the Sitarampur bypass line under the Asansol division, RVNL said in an exchange filing. RVNL has received a Letter of Acceptance from the Eastern Railway for the construction of the Sitarampur bypass line under the Asansol Division of Eastern Railway, it added. "The project cost is Rs 3,90,97,35,276.55 including GST, and the duration of the project is 24 months," the company said. RVNL, under the Ministry of Railways, is involved in project development, financing and implementation of projects related to rail infrastructure.
