Can Harris prosecute political case against Trump: All you need to know

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will debate for the first and perhaps, last time on Tuesday night as the presidential candidates fight to sway voters on the biggest stage in U.S. politics. The meeting comes just 75 days after President Joe Biden's disastrous debate performance triggered a political earthquake that ultimately forced him from the race. Few expect such a transformative result this time, but Trump is on a mission to end Harris' honeymoon as polls suggest the Democratic vice president is now even or slightly ahead of the Republican former president in some swing states. Harris, a former courtroom prosecutor, will enter the night with relatively high expectations against a Republican opponent with 34 felony convictions and a penchant for false statements. The question is whether Harris, who did not particularly stand out during primary debates in her 2020 presidential campaign, can prosecute Trump's glaring liabilities in a face-to-face meeting on live television with .

Harris accepts rules for Sept 10 debate with Trump, including muting mic

Vice President Kamala Harris has accepted the rules set forth for next week's debate with former President Donald Trump, although the Democratic nominee says the decision not to keep both candidates' microphones live throughout the matchup will be to her disadvantage. The development, which came Wednesday by way of a letter from Harris' campaign to host network ABC News, seemed to mark a conclusion to the debate over microphone muting, which had for a time threatened to derail the Sept. 10 presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. President Joe Biden's campaign had made the muting of microphones, except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak, a condition of his decision to accept any debates this year. Some aides have said they now regret that decision, saying voters were shielded from hearing Trump's outbursts during the June debate. A disastrous performance for the incumbent Democrat fueled his exit from the campaign. Once Harris rose in Biden's

US election: 'Indian Americans for Harris' grassroots campaign launched

A group of eminent Indian-Americans has launched a grassroots campaign in support of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in key battleground states. Vice President Harris, 59, who is of mixed parentage, her mother immigrated to the US from Chennai and her father moved to the country from Jamaica, is up against Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump, 78. The "Indian Americans for Harris" campaign -- launched on Tuesday -- aims at ensuring that the presidential elections make history by electing Harris as the first person of Indian heritage to lead the US, according to the group's members. "This is the first time we have someone whose mother is from India. She has got Indian heritage and culture. What she has learned, I felt that we Indian Americans should support her beyond the party line," North Carolina-based businessman Swadesh Chatterjee told PTI. It has never happened in the history of the US "to have somebody named Kamala running for the highest offic

Walz unharmed after vehicles near the back of his motorcade crash

Several cars at the back of a motorcade carrying Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz crashed while heading from the airport to a campaign stop in Milwaukee on Monday, but Walz was unhurt. The crashed occurred shortly before 1 p.m. local time. Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign said she spoke with Walz shortly after the crash and that he was not injured. The campaign said the crash involved cars near the rear of the motorcade, not closer to the front, where Walz, who is also the governor of Minnesota, was riding. A member of Walz traveling staff, who was in a van carrying reporters, was injured and being treated by medics, according to a pool report from a reporter traveling in Walz's motorcade. The pool reporter said others in the van were shaken but appeared to be OK after being violently thrown forward, as our van slammed into the one in front of us and was hit from behind. It wasn't immediately clear what caused the crash. The crash occurred after Walz and his wife

Labour Day parade: Harris looks to Biden for boost in Pennsylvania

Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden are co-headlining a campaign event Monday in the marquee battleground state of Pennsylvania as Harris balances presenting herself as a new way forward while remaining intensely loyal to Biden and the policies he has pushed. The pair will attend Pittsburgh's Labor Day parade and offer some remarks, the first time the two have shared a speaking slot on the political stage together since the surprising election shakeup that provided a fresh jolt of Democratic enthusiasm to the 2024 election. Harris' campaign has said Pennsylvania voters are newly energized since Harris moved to the top of the ticket six weeks ago, with tens of thousands of new volunteers signed up to canvass for her and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee. Harris' and Biden's appearance at the parade, one of the largest such gatherings in the country, is part of a battleground state blitz with just over two months until Election ...

Usha Vance's Hindu identity: Asset or liability for Trump-Vance campaign?

Usha Chilukuri Vance loves her meat and potatoes husband, JD Vance. She explained to a rapt Republican National Convention audience how their vice-presidential candidate adapted to her vegetarian diet and even learned to cook Indian food from her immigrant mother. That image of her white, Christian husband making the spicy cuisine of her parents' native state in South India is atypical for the leaders of a party whose members are still largely white and Christian. Her presence at the RNC sparked enthusiasm on social media among some Indian American conservatives, particularly Hindu Americans, although most Indian Americans identify as Democrats. But for all Usha Vance shared about their identity-blending marriage in her speech last month in Milwaukee, which was a little over four minutes, she made no mention of her Hindu upbringing or her personal faith and their interfaith relationship biographical details that have exposed her to online vitriol and hate. While some political ...

US elections: Harris calls Trump's appearance at Arlington political stunt

US Vice President Kamala Harris said former President Donald Trump disrespected sacred ground in his recent appearance at Arlington National Cemetery, where the Republican nominee took and distributed images despite a federal prohibition on campaign activity on the grounds. Harris, in a statement posted Saturday on the social media platform X, cited reports that Trump's campaign aides created an altercation with a cemetery staffer and proceeded to take photographs and film the former president, including at the graves of Afghanistan war veterans, after being warned about rules at the site. Let me be clear: the former president disrespected sacred ground, all for the sake of a political stunt, Harris said, calling Arlington a solemn place where we come together to honour American heroes ... not a place for politics. The original incident stemmed from Trump's and Republicans' continued criticism of President Joe Biden and now Harris for the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan. At t

Trump makes fresh personal attacks against Harris, calls her defective

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has launched a fresh personal attack on his Democratic rival Kamala Harris, calling her defective". His latest attacks come after Harris sat for her first major interview with CNN as her party's presidential nominee on Thursday. Fifty-nine-year-old Harris, who is of Indian and African descent, is the Democratic Party candidate in the November 5 presidential election in which she will contest against Trump, 78. I think she would've been better off if she just did interviews, even if they weren't great it would have been better because now everyone's watching and now we see, she's defective, Trump said on Friday at the annual gathering of Moms for Liberty, a conservative nonprofit. She's a defective person. And we don't need another defective person as president of the United States, Trump said, likely referring to President Joe Biden who dropped out of the race last month and endorsed Harris. He also said Biden was sharp as a tack, dur

Harris, Trump offer starkly different visions on climate change, energy

As the Earth sizzled through a summer with four of the hottest days ever measured, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have starkly different visions on how to address a changing climate while ensuring a reliable energy supply. But neither has provided many details on how they would get there. During her acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, Harris briefly mentioned climate change as she outlined fundamental freedoms at stake in the election, including the freedom to breathe clean air and drink clean water and live free from the pollution that fuels the climate crisis. As vice president, Harris cast the tie-breaking vote on the Inflation Reduction Act, President Joe Biden's landmark climate law that was approved with only Democratic support. As a senator from California, she was an early sponsor of the Green New Deal, a sweeping series of proposals meant to swiftly move the U.S. to fully green energy that is championed by the Democratic .

Prez Biden called to inform about decision to not seek reelection: Harris

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has said President Joe Biden called her personally on a Sunday to inform her about his decision to not seek reelection, asserting that he was "very clear" about endorsing her instead. In the first major television interview of her presidential campaign on Thursday, the 59-year-old Vice President said she was with her family when she got the call from Biden, 81. Harris said that she was having bacon with her baby nieces when her phone rang. "And it was Joe Biden. And and he told me what he had decided to do. And I asked him, 'Are you sure?' And he said, 'Yes.' And that's how I learned about it," she told CNN in a joint interview with her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Last month, Biden, 81, dropped out of the presidential race, saying it was in "the best interest" of the Democratic Party and the country to withdraw from the race. Biden had a disastrous presidential debate against former president Donald Trump, who is the ...

US elections: America ready to turn page on Trump, says Kamala Harris

The American people are ready to "turn the page" on Donald Trump, Kamala Harris has said, asserting that her Republican challenger is pushing an agenda which "divides" the country and "diminishes the character" of its people. In her first major television interview of her presidential campaign, the 59-year-old US Vice President, who will face Trump in the November 5 elections, said the American people are ready for a "new way forward". "I think sadly in the last decade, we have had in the former president someone who has really been pushing an agenda and an environment that is about diminishing the character and the strength of who we are as Americans really dividing our nation," Harris, in a joint interview with her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, told CNN. "And I think people are ready to turn the page on that," Harris, the Democratic Party's candidate, said. "The American people are ready for a new way forward.
