Confident of resolving Eshwarappa issue, says state BJP chief Vijayendra

Amid a banner of revolt raised by senior BJP leader K S Eshwarappa, the party's Karnataka President B Y Vijayendra on Monday expressed confidence about the issue getting resolved, and said it was natural for aspirants to get upset on not getting the ticket to contest elections. Acknowledging Eshwarappa's contribution in building and strengthening the BJP in Karnataka, he said the candidates for Lok Sabha polls were decided by the national leadership of the party, and it was not his decision. Eshwarappa has announced he will contest as an independent candidate from Shimoga seat in the coming Lok Sabha polls, blaming Vijayendra and his father and veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa for his son K E Kantesh being denied a party ticket from Haveri constituency. Former CM Basavaraj Bommai has got BJP's Haveri ticket. Yediyurappa's son and sitting MP B Y Raghavendra is the BJP candidate from Shimoga. LS polls: Reluctance of ministers to enter fray puts Karnataka Cong in spot

Reluctance of some ministers and lawmakers in Karnataka to contest the Lok Sabha polls seems to have put the Congress scouting for "winnable" candidates in a spot of bother in finalising contestants for bulk of the seats. It has been ten days since the Congress announced its candidates for seven segments while the process to pick nominees for the remaining 21 seats is on. The Congress' first list released on March eight did not have names of any of the ministers and legislators. According to party sources, the Congress leadership has been making efforts to convince some ministers and lawmakers to contest, as they have faced problems in identifying winnable candidates in several segments. Senior Congress leader and Home Minister G Parameshwara had recently said there are discussions in the party to field seven to eight ministers. Some ministers instead of themselves contesting, are said to be pushing for the candidature of their family members and, according to sources, the party .

BJP leader Eshwarappa blames Yediyurappa for son being denied BJP ticket

Senior BJP leader K S Eshwarappa has blamed former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa for his son K E Kantesh being denied party ticket to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections from Haveri seat. The 75-year-old former Deputy Chief Minister alleged that Yediyurappa, who is a member of the BJP Parliamentary Board, had assured ticket to his son and also promised to campaign for his victory but "cheated him." The BJP on Wednesday named former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai for the Haveri seat. He said Yediyurappa ensured that Bommai and Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shobha Karandlaje got the BJP ticket to contest the elections, and "not for his son." Eshwarappa, who had served as the party's State President, said his followers and well-wishers are exerting pressure on him to contest as an independent in Shivamogga constituency, adding, he has convened a meeting with his supporters here on Friday after which he would decide on his next step. The party has .

B'luru water crisis: Legal action against drilling unauthorised borewells

Amid the water crisis, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has said it will take legal action against those drilling unauthorised borewells within the city limits. Starting March 15, people can seek permission for drilling borewells by submitting their applications on the official website of the Board and approval will be granted based on site inspection by the concerned officials, it said. BWSSB said in an order that before drilling borewells for personal or other use in Bengaluru city, it is mandatory to obtain permission from concerned authorities as per section 11 of Karnataka Ground Water (Regulation and Control of Development and Management) Act, 2011. It cited lack of adequate rainwater as a reason for decline in ground water level and said many borewells in the city have dried up. Officials also suspect that ground water level in the city is also decreasing due to "unscientific drilling" of borewells. According to the order, borewells should be drilled on

Karnataka faces acute water crisis due to poor rainfall, B'luru worst hit

A coaching centre in Vijayanagar in Bengaluru asked its students to attend classes online due to an 'emergency' for a week. Similarly, a school on Bannerghatta Road in the city shut down, asking the students to attend classes virtually. The 'emergency' is the acute water crisis. Karnataka, especially its capital, is facing one of the worst water crisis in recent years due to poor rainfall in 2023. The Indian Meteorology Department has attributed the scanty rains to El Nino effect. One can gauge the grim situation from the fact that water tankers were seen inside Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's office residence on Kumarakrupa Road in Bengaluru. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said the borewell in his house in Sadashivanagar in the state capital has gone dry for the first time. This happened despite the fact that Sadashivanagar is located next to Sankey Lake. Water tankers running frequently on the Bengaluru roads have become a common sight now. On normal days, the w
