Cash-strapped HAL's 'best' scientists will move to Anil Ambani group: Rahul

Congress president Rahul Gandhi Monday alleged that the "best" engineers and scientists from cash-strapped HAL will be forced to move to the Anil Ambani group that has the Rafale fighter jet contract. This will happen as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) does not have enough money to pay salaries to its employees and Ambani needs its talent to deliver on his contract, Gandhi said. "That HAL doesn't have enough cash to pay salaries, isn't surprising. Anil Ambani has Rafale. He now needs HAL's brilliant talent pool to deliver on his contracts. Without salaries, HAL's best engineers and scientists will be forced to move to AA's venture," he said on Twitter. Gandhi said this while citing a report whereby cash-strapped HAL has taken loans to pay salaries to its employees.

Flights scrapped as Berlin airports brace for Monday strike

Hundreds of German passengers were facing travel upheaval on Monday with security staff at Berlin's two airports set to walk out in a pay dispute. The action, called by the powerful Verdi union at the German capital's Tegel and Schoenefeld airports, is due to start at 05:00 am (0400 GMT) and end at 8:45 am. Some 80 flights are expected to be affected, according to DPA news agency, mostly at the city's main Tegel airport. German flagship carrier Lufthansa said it was cancelling four flights on its Berlin-Frankfurt route and four more between Berlin and Munich. The roughly 850 passengers booked on those flights could use their tickets to travel by train instead, Lufthansa added. "We regret that our passengers have to start the new year with disruptions," Lufthansa board member Detlef Kayser told DPA. The strike comes after Verdi, which represents some 23,000 airport security workers nationwide, said talks with the BDLS employers' association were deadlocked. The union wants to see wages

Airports seeing rise in security screeners calling off work

The federal agency tasked with guaranteeing US airport security acknowledged an increase in the number of its employees calling off work during the partial government shutdown. Employees of the Transportation Security Administration are expected to work without pay during the shutdown because their jobs are considered essential. The TSA said in a statement Friday that call outs that began over the holiday period have increased. The agency did not say how many of its employees have called out, but it said the call outs have had "minimal impact given that there are 51,739 employees supporting the screening process." The statement said wait times "may be affected" but so far "remain well within TSA standards." "TSA is closely monitoring the situation," the agency statement said. "Security effectiveness will not be compromised." The Department of Homeland Security and President Donald Trump pushed back Saturday on suggestions that the absences represented a "sickout" that was having ...

The US saw 312,000 new jobs being added to its economy in December 2018, according to an official employment report released Friday. "GREAT JOBS NUMBERS JUST ANNOUNCED!" President Donald Trump tweeted soon after the Bureau of Labour Statistics in its monthly employment report for December said that non-farm payroll employment increased by 312,000 in the country and the unemployment rate was at 3.9 per cent. The unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage point to 3.9 per cent in December, but that was due to more workers joining the job hunt, the report said. Why was Rahul 'silent' when Kamal Nath spoke against workers from UP, Bihar: Smriti Irani

Union minister Smriti Irani Friday asked why Congress chief Rahul Gandhi was "silent" when Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath had said that people from UP and Bihar get employment in MP at the cost of the local population. "Why was Rahul silent when Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath spoke against people from UP and Bihar working in that state? How will he look into the eyes of people in Amethi today?" she said, ahead of Gandhi's visit to his Lok Sabha constituency. Irani was on a day's visit to Amethi, about 140km from the state capital Lucknow. For her visit, local BJP leaders had put up posters seeking an explanation from the Congress president on Kamal Nath's statement on workers from UP and Bihar. One of the posters carried a collage of newspaper clippings of his statement. Similarly for Gandhi's visit later in the day, Congress workers have put up posters praising him over the party's victories in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. "Teen rajyon ki jeet ke ...

Unemployment biggest problem facing country: Gadkari

Unemployment is the biggest of the major problems facing the country, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Fiday said, adding that there was a "difference" between employment and jobs. He was addressing a youth empowerment summit organised by Fortune Foundation here. Speaking on employment generation, Gadkari said, "To address the problem of unemployment, not everyone can get jobs. Because there is a difference between employment and jobs. There are limitations to jobs and therefore creation of employment is the main part of the financial policy of any government." "There is a need to think about how to create employment opportunities in rural and urban areas of the country," Gadkari added. He claimed that the Maharashtra government had managed to create jobs in Vidarbha, particularly Nagpur in the last four years, and cited Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport (MIHAN), the Butibori MIDC area and Nagpur metro rail as examples. "Chief Minister (Devendra) Fadnavis and .

Govt trying to redraft process of granting recognition to trade unions: CITU

Left-backed labour union CITU on Thursday came down heavily on the Centre's move to amend the Trade Unions Act and accused the BJP government of redrafting the procedure of granting recognition to central trade unions. The Trade Unions (Amendment) Act, 2018 is "thoroughly designed with dubious articulation to impose conditions of slavery on the working people and totally abrogate trade union rights", the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) said in a statement. The CITU alleged that the proposed amendments reveal the government's dubious intent in total departure from existing mutually-agreed practices being followed for the last couple of decades. It pledged to raise the issues during its countrywide two day general strike on January 8 and 9. The Narendra Modi Cabinet had on Wednesday approved amendment to the Trade Unions Act, 1926, to make provisions regarding recognition of trade unions. The present Act provides for only registration of trade unions and there is no provision for ..

AITUC condemns govt move to amend Trade Union Act

All India Trade Union Congress Thursday said the government has proposed amendment to Trade Union Act with "malafide intentions and to interfere with independent functioning of trade unions in the country". The Cabinet Wednesday approved amendment to the Trade Unions Act, 1926 to make provisions over recognition of trade unions. The present Act provides for only registration of trade unions. Currently, there is no provision for recognition of unions in the Act. "The government has malafide intentions to meddle with the laid down procedures for recognition of trade unions at state and central level. Through this amendment they actually want rights of government in the state and central level to interfere into the independent functioning of the trade unions. "It (the bill) is regressive and would take us to British era position. We fought during British rule in India to get Trade Union Act 1926 and later on, improvements in that. But, this government is camouflaging and actually wanting

West Bengal govt employees to get DA at 125pc from January

West Bengal government employees will get dearness allowance at 125 per cent of their basic pay from this month, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said Thursday. She also assured the employees to clear all the dues by January. A leader of the West Bengal State Coordination Committee, an organisation of state government employees, said it is actually an old announcement as the state government had decided in June last year to pay DA at 125 per cent from January. On June 2018, Banerjee had announced 18 per cent hike in dearness allowance for state government employees and a 10 per cent interim relief from January 2019. Post this raise, the gap of DA between Central government employees with state employees will be 23 per cent.
