The Central government on Friday rejected the suggestion linking old age pension with minimum wage saying that while minimum wage was earned, the old age pension was a social welfare measure.

Can't just draw funds from other places for old age pension, Centre tells SC
The Centre Friday told the Supreme Court that monetary considerations come in the way of increasing monthly pension to old age persons as the government "just cannot draw" money from other places. The Centre's submitted this before a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta while responding to arguments advanced by former union minister and senior advocate Ashwini Kumar, who has filed a plea seeking a direction to the Centre to increase the monthly pensions of Rs 200 and Rs 500 which were fixed way back in 2007 for senior citizens. Kumar, who told the apex court that he had "failed" as a parliamentarian and minister but did not want to fail as a citizen, said that in 2007 the Centre had fixed Rs 200 as pension to senior citizens aged between 60 to 79 while a person of 80-year-old and above was given a pension of Rs 500 only. 'Sacked without notice', hundreds of workers go on rampage at phone-making unit
Hundreds of employees of a Chinese smartphone manufacturing facility here resorted to violence on Thursday after around 200 of them were "sacked without notice", officials said. Around 1,200 workers of the Hipad Technology India, which makes Xiaomi and Oppo phones, went on a rampage pelting stones at the building and barging into the facility in Sector 63, they said. However, the company had no official response till the time the report was filed. Police force was deployed at the site even as senior officers, including Superintendent of Police, Noida City, Sudha Singh, reached there to assess the situation. Singh said police were alerted about the violence breaking out at the factory, under Phase 3 police station limits, around 10 am and immediately reached the spot. "We got to know that several employees had resorted to violence after they were 'sacked' by their office without any notice," she said. Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat accused the Congress Thursday of copying its manifesto for the Rajasthan Assembly elections scheduled to be held on December 7. While talking to reporters here, the minister said most of the public welfare issues in the Congress's manifesto were already raised by the BJP. The Congress in its election manifesto released Thursday made promises like loan waiver to farmers, free education to girls and women, unemployment allowance of up to Rs 3,500 to educated youth and pension to elderly farmers, among others. Makers of Kangana Ranaut-starrer "Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi" are yet to clear dues of approximately Rs 1.5 crore to the workers and junior artists, according to Federation of Western India Cine Employees. The film, which is due to be released on January 25 next year, is currently under post-production. The makers have been shooting some portions of the film at Filmcity in suburban Mumbai. The shoot was halted Wednesday afternoon mid-way because of non-payment of dues of workers, technicians and junior artists. US lawsuit win: TCS says will continue to invest in people irrespective of their national origin
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Thursday said its employee hiring and retention decisions are based "purely on capabilities" and not on background or national origin, as a US jury ruled in favour of India's biggest IT firm in a case involving charges of discrimination. A California jury unanimously sided with TCS, saying the Indian company did not discriminate against non-south Asian workers in the US as alleged in a lawsuit, marking a significant win for the Mumbai-based firm as well as for the over USD 120 billion Indian IT outsourcing industry. Four petrochemical regions attract Rs 1.83 lakh cr investments, create 3 lakh jobs: Govt
Around Rs 1.83 lakh crore has been invested and over 3 lakh people have been employed so far in four petrochemical investment regions being developed in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu, the government said Thursday. In an official statement, Minister of State for Chemicals & Fertilisers Mansukh L Mandaviya said the department of chemicals & petrochemicals has registered good progress by facilitating increased investments in Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemical Investment Regions (PCPIRs) for boosting industrial development and employment generation. Under the cluster-based development model, the department has identified four PCPIRs - in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu that are in advanced stages of implementation. "Upon completion, these PCPIRs will have an estimated investment of approximately Rs 8 lakh crore and are expected to generate employment for approximately 40 lakh people. So far, around Rs 1,83,000 crore have been invested in these .
US jury rules in favour of TCS over alleged discrimination
In a significant victory for the Indian IT outsourcing industry, a California jury unanimously sided with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), saying the Indian consulting major did not discriminate against non-South Asian workers in the US as alleged in a lawsuit. According to a report in legal news portal law360.com, the unanimous nine-member jury found in an Oakland, California court Wednesday that the TCS did not have a "pattern or practice" of intentionally discriminating against non-South Asian workers due to their race or national origin. The verdict came after one day of deliberations, ending a trial that began on November 5 over a class action lawsuit brought by three former TCS employees, Christopher Slaight, Seyed Amir Masoudi and Nobel Mandili, who claimed in the suit that they received fewer work opportunities and were eventually fired because of their races and national origins. The Labour department in Jammu and Kashmir has gone online with a host of services, including benefits under various welfare schemes for the workers, an official spokesperson said Wednesday. Advisor to Governor Khursheed Ahmed Ganai launched the departmental portal here Tuesday before taking a review of the performance of its different wings, he said. The portal will provide 31 services online, including benefits under various welfare schemes for the workers, payment of various kinds of fee and information about labour laws and rules, he said. While hailing the introduction of the IT-enabled services by the department, Ganai stressed on the need to have a trained workforce for effective operation of the system. The portal is jointly created by the Labour department and the Small Scale Industries Development Corporation (SICOP).
Trudeau, Trump share 'disappointment' over GM plant closures
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Donald Trump found common ground during a phone call Tuesday in which they discussed the announced closure of General Motors plants. "They expressed their disappointment over the closures of the GM plants in Canada and the US" and "underscored their concern for the workers, their families and the communities that are affected by this decision," Trudeau spokesman Cameron Ahmad said. The White House confirmed the call and used similar language, saying: "The two leaders discussed their disappointment in the announced closures of General Motors plants in their respective countries and their plans for the upcoming G20 Summit." Former Odisha cadre IAS officer Aparajita Sarangi joined the ruling BJP at the residence of party chief Amit Shah here Tuesday. 30 lakhs jobseekers registered in employment banks in Bengal
West Bengal has around 30 lakh jobseekers registered in its employment banks, the state Assembly was informed Tuesday. "There are around 30,92,518 jobseekers registered in the employment banks of the state," Labour minister Moloy Ghatak informed the Assembly in a written reply. Around 1,63,748 people out of the 30,92,518 jobseekers are being given Yuvasree allowance in the state. Yuvasree is a financial assistance under which the West Bengal government gives Rs 1,500 per month to jobseekers enrolled in employment banks to enable them to enhance their employability by undergoing some education or training within the period of assistance.
