Nepal PM Oli unveils social security plan for formal sector employees

Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday unveiled a contribution-based social security scheme for formal sector workers that will cover health and medical facilities, safe motherhood, accident and physical incapacity, security to dependent family members and security at old age. "It was important to strengthen the system in which the state is accountable to its people. This scheme has been introduced to address that issue," Oli said unveiling the scheme at a function here. The scheme will compulsorily be applied for formal sector workers and the government will soon launch it for informal sector workers as well, according to the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security. Oli said people of all ages and categories would be included in the scheme. As per the scheme, which will come into effect from May 22, private sector employees will have to mandatorily contribute 11 per cent of their basic salary to the social security fund (SSF), while employers will have to contribute

Rajasthan polls:BJP releases manifesto

The BJP on Tuesday released its manifesto for the December 7 Rajasthan polls, saying it had met 95 per cent of the promises it had made in 2013. The manifesto was unveiled by Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Prakash Javadekar, and Rajathan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, in the presence of BJP leaders and workers here. The BJP government in the state met 630 of the 665 promises made in the 2013 Rajasthan manifesto, Raje said prior to releasing the manifesto. "The overall completion is 95 per cent," she said. Raje also highlighted several points of the 2018 manifesto, saying 50 lakh jobs will be created in private sector in next five years in Rajasthan and every year, 30,000 jobs will be given in the government sector. The chief minister also said up to Rs 5,000 per month will be given as unemployment allowance to eligible youths above the age of 21 years.

India recorded highest average real wage growth in South Asia during 2008-17: ILO report

India recorded the highest average real wage growth in South Asia during 200817, according to a report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Reflecting more rapid economic growth than in other regions, workers in Asia and the Pacific have enjoyed the highest real wage growth among all regions over the period 200617, with countries such as China, India, Thailand and Viet Nam leading the way, the Global Wage Report 2018/19 said. In South Asia, India led the average real wage growth in 200817 at 5.5 against a regional median of 3.7. Following India was Nepal (4.7), Sri Lanka (4), Bangladesh (3.4), Pakistan (1.8) and Iran (0.4). The report said that all emerging G20 countries except Mexico experienced significant positive growth in average real wages between 2008 and 2017. Jet Airways layoffs: Airline fires 16 more people to cut cost

Crisis-hit Jet Airways continues to use layoffs in small chunks as one of the means to reduce cost with the carrier handing over pink slips to around 16 more employees, a source said Monday. These employees were working as ground staff in Jet Airway's Kochi and Hyderabad offices, as per the source. Late last month, the airline had laid off 20 employees, including some senior-level executives from the in-flight services department. Prior to that, it reportedly had asked 15 managerial level employees from various departments including engineering, security and sales, to leave the company. Kejriwal announces old pension scheme will be restored in Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced Monday that the old pension scheme will be restored by his government and he will write to his counterparts in other states to follow the suit. He said a resolution to restore the old pension scheme in the city will be passed in a special session of the Legislative Assembly. "It will then be sent to the Centre for approval. GM to close Canadian factory, putting 3000 jobs at risk: Reports

General Motors is to announce on Monday the closure of a factory in Canada, putting almost 3,000 jobs at risk, Canadian news media reported. The decision is part of the US automaker's plans for a comprehensive global restructuring, channel CTV reported Sunday, citing several anonymous sources. Other media, including Radio-Canada/CBC, had similar reports. The plant in Oshawa, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) northeast of Toronto, was built in 1953, according to the manufacturer's website. NMDC mgmt inks pact with Unions Federation on workmen salaries revision

State-run miner NMDC said Saturday that decks were cleared for revision of salaries of its workers as a bipartite agreement was signed between the company's management and Unions Federation. Revision in the salaries of thousands of workmen working in Bailadila and Donimalai mines and other units of NMDC is cleared, a company statement said. The agreement on wage revision 2017 was signed at the bipartite meeting of the NMDC management and Federation of Unions organised on Thursday in Kolkata. N Baijendra Kumar, CMD, and other functional directors represented the NMDC management. Gaja: CM announces job, solatium, to electrocuted workers' kin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami Saturday announced a solatium of Rs 15 lakh to the families of each of the two workers of state-run power utility, TANGEDCO who were electrocuted while repairing electricity poles damaged due to cyclone Gaja. Condoling the deaths of the two workers, he said one person from each of their families would also be provided employment in a government enterprise. DU professor writes to varsity's VC to grant paid maternity leave to ad-hoc teachers

An executive council member of the Delhi University has written to the varsity's vice-chancellor urging him to extend the benefits of paid maternity leave to ad-hoc and contractual teachers. Executive Council (EC) member and professor Rajesh Jha wrote to the DU VC after receiving a letter from the chairman of governing body of Aditi Mahavidyalaya. The Governing Body of Aditi Mahavidyalaya had adopted a resolution in July for extending the benefits of paid maternity leave to ad-hoc teachers and contractual staff of the college, which is presently not available to them, Jha said. This GB resolution citing the relevant legal provisions had been submitted to VC for the necessary action, he added. J&K employees' personal accidental insurance scheme to be renewed from Dec 1

The Governor's administration Thursday ordered renewal of the group personal accidental insurance policy commencing from midnight of December 1, 2018 in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. It will continue till midnight November 30, 2019, as per the agreement already executed between the government of Jammu and Kashmir and Oriental insurance company Ltd, they added. According to the Principal Secretary Finance, Navin K Choudhary, the policy shall cover an aggregate of more than 3.50 lakh employees including the employees of PSUs, autonomous bodies, local bodies, universities, daily rated workers, Consolidated, contractual, contingent paid workers, ad hoc workers and SPOs. The sum assured under this policy shall be Rs 10 lakh per employee against payment of a yearly premium of Rs 360 inclusive of GST, he said. Retired BSNL, MTNL staff hold one-day hunger strike for pension revision

Retired employees of state-run telecom firms BSNL and MTNL on Thursday held a one-day hunger strike to protest against non-revision of their pension as per the Seventh Pay Commission, the organisers said. "BSNL and MTNL pensioners who were absorbed from Department of Telecom under the banner of Committee of BSNL and MTNL Pensioners' Associations observed fast today throughout the country demanding pension revision from January 1, 2017 with 32 percent fitment factor which was given to central government pensioners numbering more than 60 lakh from January 2016," Convener, Joint Forum of Retirees, S S Nanda said. The pension of nearly 62 lakh central government pensioners were revised with effect from January 1, 2016 as per recommendation of the 7th central pay commission, he said. Andhra govt to grant minimum time scale to contract-based employees

The Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday decided to give minimum time scale to contract employees, a decision that is expected to benefit 23,372 employees in the medical and health department and 3,802 employees in the higher education department.The government announced that women employees will be given 180 days of maternity leave, the retirement age of contract employees will be increased from 58 to 60 years. Central trade unions boycott tripartite meeting on labour code on safety, health

The central trade unions have boycotted a scheduled tripartite meeting on labour code on occupational safety, health and working conditions, organised by the Labour Ministry on Thursday. In a letter to Labour and Employment Minister Santosh Gangwar, the trade unions said they had received a mail signed by the under secretary of the ministry about the tripartite consulting meeting on November 20 afternoon and have decided to boycott it. "We are constrained to convey to you that the tripartite consultation exercise with the stakeholders has been practically reduced to a ritualism, which the central trade unions cannot put up with," they said in the letter. AP tops in employability level among states

Andhra Pradesh has emerged on top in terms of employability among the states with the engineering graduates having the highest level of employability, according to India Skills Report-2019. Employability level of B.Tech and B.E graduates from the state shot up significantly to 63.11 per cent this year from 42.08 per cent last year, a release here said Thursday. MBA and polytechnic graduates' employability increased to 47.18 per cent and 45.90 per cent respectively against 44.90 per cent and 35.85 per cent respectively the previous year. The report is a joint initiative of Wheebox, a global talent assessment company, PeopleStrong, a leading HR Tech company and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
