DCW rescues 95-year-old woman held captive by daughter-in-law

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Friday rescued a 95-year-old woman who was allegedly being held captive by her daughter-in-law.The move came after the DCW helpline received a call from a person complaining that his old mother was being held captive and tortured by his wife and in-laws. The complainant also informed that his mother is completely bedridden.He further stated that he and his wife are having matrimonial discord since they got married and that he has not seen his mother for the last three months.The complainant mentioned that whenever he tries to meet his mother, he is forced to take help from the local police as his wife does not let him enter the house.The man stated that he got hopeful when he read in the news that DCW had rescued a 50-year-old woman who was held captive by her brother for two years.Taking action on his plea, the DCW team went to the location where the old woman was kept but his wife initially didn't let the DCW team enter the house.However, ...

Tata Steel senior manager shot dead by ex-employee

In a shocking incident, a senior manager of the Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Ltd (TSPDL) was shot dead by a former employee of the company in Faridabad on Friday.The TSPDL, in a statement, informed that the incident took place at around 1:10 pm at Faridabad office of the company, wherein Arindam Pal, senior manager, was shot dead by the former employee Vishwash Pandey.After shooting Pal, Pandey immediately ran out of office and is still at large. The victim died on his way to the hospital.Pandey worked with TSPDL from 2015 to 2018. He was discharged from the services of the company in August this year.Ashok Kumar, SHO, Mujesar, informed, "In the initial reports, the doctors revealed that five bullets were pumped in Pal's body. Rs 50.7 lakh gold robbery case solved with arrest of 3 in MP

Three members of a gang, which robbed gold ornaments worth Rs 50.7 lakh from a 44-year-old man, were arrested from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh by the Navi Mumbai Police, an official said Friday. The incident took place Monday night at Kalamboli on the Sion-Panvel highway, when the victim, Santosh Murkumbi - hailing from Karnataka - was waiting for a bus, he said. Murkambi was robbed by four unidentified persons who came in a car, the official said. The robbers stopped their car in front of Murkambi and started beating him. The quartet then fled the spot after looting gold ornaments worth Rs 50.7 lakh from him, he said. Murkambi alerted the police about the incident and gave the car's registration number, which he had managed to note down, the official said. Never imagined one could land in jail for bursting crackers: Tweets Delhi DCP, removes it later

A Delhi Police deputy commissioner has tweeted he never imagined that bursting firecrackers could land somebody in jail, only to delete the post after it went viral. The Delhi Police, however, on Friday said it had nothing to do with the tweet and the officer had posted it from his personal Twitter handle. "Bursting firecrackers on Diwali could land you in jail. Never imagined such a day would come. Am I in my country, Bharat? Jai Sri Ram. Jai Hind," Deputy Commissioner of Police(Southwest) Devender Arya, had tweeted in Hindi. He later deleted it. EPCA to go after polluting vehicles: Chairperson Bhure Lal

Amid severe deterioration of air quality in the national capital, Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) Chairperson Bhure Lal has assured that the Supreme Court-appointed body would go after vehicles causing pollution in the city. He also said people should have abided by the direction of the Supreme Court on bursting of firecrackers in the stipulated time frame of 8pm to 10 pm. On Thursday, a thick haze engulfed Delhi as it recorded its worst air quality of the year the morning after Diwali, with the pollution level ten times the permissible limit due to rampant bursting of toxic firecrackers in gross violation of a Supreme Court order, authorities said. Lal said with the deterioration in the air quality, "the EPCA would go after polluting vehicles, which are increasing the pollution". Over Rs 1 cr gold bars,biscuits seized

: Gold bars and biscuits worth over Rs one crore were seized from an Air India Express flight by customs officials at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Friday, a senior official said here. The gold bars and gold biscuits, weighing 3.57 kilograms and valued at Rs 1.13 crore, were recovered from behind the seat of the flight, which arrived at Thiruvananthapuram airport from Dubai early Friday, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said. He said investigation was on to identify the suspects involved in the smuggling of the gold. No one is ruled out. We are looking at those with access to aircraft. We will get to the bottom of this racket, Kumar told PTI. He said sleuths were increasing checks of suspect airlines coming from sensitive areas.

Woman, 4-year-old son found dead in Ambala

A woman and her four-year-old son were found murdered at their home here, police said Friday. There were injury marks on the bodies of Nirmala (50) and her son, apparently made from sharp objects, the police said. Nirmala's husband, Devender, was apparently out on a business trip to Nangal town in Punjab on Thursday. When he returned late at night, he found both of them dead in the kitchen of their house in Ram Nagar colony, said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ajit Kumar. A preliminary investigation has not revealed any signs of robbery as no valuables were found missing. Devender told the police he had no enmity with anyone in the colony, the DSP said. The dog squad and forensic teams were summoned to the spot. Two police teams have been constituted to nab the culprits, Kumar said. A case has been registered against unknown assailants and investigation is on, the officer said, adding that the bodies were handed over to the family after post-mortem.

Maha: Mumbai cop arrested for ruckus at Thane police station

A Mumbai police constable was arrested Friday for allegedly creating ruckus at a police station in neighbouring Thane, a senior official said. Constable Mahadeo Kamble (29) had reached the Kolsewadi police station in Kalyan here after his wife arrived there to file a complaint against him, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. The accused's wife told Kolsewadi police that he used to assault her after getting drunk, the official said. "The accused came to the police station and started abusing personnel who were attending to his wife's complaint. He broke the jaw of one of the personnel on duty. He has been arrested and a court has remanded him in judicial custody," the official said. Kamble is attached to Shahu Nagar police station in Mumbai, the official said.

Indian-origin man gets 9-year jail term for drugs offences in UK

An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to nine years' imprisonment by a UK court after being found guilty of conspiracy to supply illegal Class A drugs. Jeetendra Parekh, 48, was sentenced after a three-day trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London on Thursday. The court was told that Parekh and a female accomplice, 29-year-old Sibela Ahmed, were caught in a taxi by Scotland Yard officers carrying a plastic bag containing 5 kilograms of heroin in the rear passenger foot-well, with an estimated street value of 500,000 pounds. Officers later searched an address linked to Ahmed and found a further 46 kg of heroin, with an estimated street value of 4.6 million pounds. Ahmed had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to possession with intent to supply and was jailed for eight years last month. Differently abled girl raped in West Bengal, dies

A differently abled 10-year-old minor, who was allegedly raped in Simulia area of Howrah district on Monday, died while being taken to a hospital, police said on Friday. The deaf and dumb girl was raped inside a toilet near her residence under Shyampur police station on Monday, a police officer said. However, the incident came to light only on Thursday after her mother noticed that she was behaving differently for the last few days and also experiencing urinary problems, he said. She was then taken to a local hospital, where doctors confirmed rape and referred her to the Uluberia sub-divisional hospital, but the girl died en route, the officer said. The accused, 18, was arrested on Friday and produced in Uluberia court, which remanded him to seven days police custody, he said.

Una redux: 3 Dalits thrashed for objecting to casteist slur

Three Dalits were allegedly thrashed by four men for objecting to their casteist slur in a village near Una town in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district, police said Friday. It comes over two years after the flogging of four Dalit youths by cow vigilantes in the same district triggered a national outcry. Man bursts cracker in child' mouth, police probe allegation

: The district police are investigating a charge that a man lit a firecracker after putting it in the mouth of a three-old-girl, seriously injuring her. The police have registered a case of attempt to murder against a local youth who is absconding since Tuesday. According to a complaint lodged at Sardhana police station, Harpal placed the firecracker in Ayushi's mouth, telling her it was a piece of chocolate. But a preliminary inquiry indicated that the girl picked up a half-lit cracker and tried to blow on it when it burst, Sardhana SHO Kapil Prashant told PTI-Bhasha on Friday. J'khand: Woman dies after raped by ex-husband, two others

A woman in Narayanpur block of Jharkhand's Jamtara district died after she was allegedly gang-raped by three men, including her former husband. Telephone exchange case: HC dismisses Maran brothers' plea seeking quashing of charges

The Madras High Court Friday dismissed the petitions of former Union telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran, his brother Kalanidhi Maran and other accused in the 'illegal' telephone exchange case, seeking quashing of charges framed by a CBI court against them. The HC also directed the CBI court to frame charges afresh. Justice A D Jagadish Chandira directed the trial court to look into all materials carefully and frame proper and necessary charges in respect of all the seven accused, as contemplated in the Criminal Procedure Code. Justice Chandira said the prosecution could assist the trial court by filing draft charges, if necessary.
