India sees improvement in maternal, child health, says 2021 SRS report

India has witnessed a significant improvement in key maternal and child health indicators between 2014 and 2021, according to a Health Ministry statement. The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has declined by 37 points from 130 per lakh live births in 2014-16 to 93 in 2019-21, the statement mentioned, citing the Sample Registration System (SRS) Report 2021 released by the Registrar General of India (RGI) on Wednesday. Similarly, the downward trend of child mortality indicators continued. The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has dropped from 39 per 1000 live births in 2014 to 27 per 1000 live births in 2021. The Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR) has declined from 26 per 1000 live births in 2014 to 19 per 1000 live births in 2021. Under-Five Mortality Rate (U5MR) has also improved, dropping from 45 in 2014 to 31 per 1000 live births in 2021. The Sex Ratio at Birth also improved between 2014 and 2031, getting better from 899 to 913, respectively. Total Fertility Rate is consistent at 2.0 in 2021

One woman dead, four critical after delivering babies at Midnapore hospital

A woman died and four others were critical after delivery of babies at the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), an official said on Saturday. The family members of the deceased woman alleged that Ringer's Lactate administered on the intravenous (IV) fluid had expired and it was responsible for her death. They have lodged a complaint at the Kotwali police station. The woman died on Friday after delivery of her baby on Wednesday, he said. After the death of a woman and the deterioration in the health conditions of four other women, the state health department has formed a 13-member panel to investigate the matter, following a police complaint lodged with the Kotwali police station by the husband of the deceased, the official said. Substandard lactate solution may have caused Ballari deaths: K'taka govt

Karnataka Health Department on Friday said the recent maternal deaths in Ballari are suspected to be due to the use of substandard ringer lactate solution that is administered intravenously to restore hydration and fluid balance in the body. According to a statement, the solution was supplied by Paschim Banga Pharmaceutical Ltd to Karnataka State Medical Supplies Corporation Ltd. The health department's officials said a sudden spurt in maternal deaths was reported from the Ballari district hospital between November 9 and 11. The deaths were reported to have occurred following caesarean operations at the hospital. Of the 34 caesarean operations performed in those three days, seven cases developed complications. In a statement, the health department said that out of the seven patients who developed complications such as acute kidney injury requiring haemodialysis and multi-organ dysfunction, four died. India tops list with 60% of global maternal & newborn deaths, stillbirths

Owing to its large birth cohort, India leads a list of 10 countries that together account for 60 per cent of global maternal deaths, stillbirths and newborn deaths, and 51 per cent of live births globally, according to a United Nations report released on Tuesday. The latest published estimate in the progress tracking report by the WHO, UNICEF, and the UNFPA was launched at the ongoing 'International Maternal Newborn Health Conference' (IMNHC 2023) here. It shows there were a combined 4.5 million deaths -- maternal deaths (0.29 million), stillbirths (1.9 million) and newborn deaths (2.3 million) -- in 2020-2021. Sub-Saharan Africa and central and Southern Asia are the regions experiencing the largest number of deaths, although across all regions, there is variation regarding the pace at which countries are progressing in their efforts to achieve the global 2030 targets.
