PM Modi going on US tour instead of resolving Manipur crisis: Uddhav

Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his scheduled visit to the US, and asked why he was going abroad instead of visiting Manipur to resolve the crisis in the violence-hit north-eastern state. Addressing a state-level convention of his party, the first since the rebellion split Shiv Sena last year, he also dared the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country. "One part of our country is in the grip of violence and Modi hasn't gone there or taken steps to resolve the crisis, but is going to America," Thackeray said. The PM will be going on a state visit to the US and Egypt from June 20 to 25. Thackeray alleged that there have been claims that PM Modi stopped the Russia-Ukraine war. "So Modi should stop the violence in Manipur and restore peace and then we will believe these claims," he added. More than 100 people have lost their lives in the ethnic violence ...

Ruling Congress, opposition BJP trade charges on rice politics in Karnataka

The rice politics in Karnataka heated up with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah accusing the Centre of creating obstacles to supply rice for its poll guarantee of 10 kilograms rice to each member of the BPL family under the 'Anna Bhagya' scheme. Siddaramaiah said Karnataka is not demanding rice for free as the state is ready to purchase it. To this, the state unit of the BJP hit back saying Siddaramaiah was intentionally creating confusion whereas the fact was that the Centre had promised to give only 5 kg rice free of cost, which it is doing. BJP stalwart and former chief minister B S Yediyurappa warned that his party will not accept if the Congress government gave even "one gram less" than the promised 10 kg rice under the 'Anna Bhagya' scheme. CM Siddaramaiah alleged: "The Central government is doing politics. We had written to them (Food Corporation of India) on June 9 that they should give us 2.28 lakh metric tonne rice. They answered on June 12 that they will supply the same. Howev

One more 'Mann Ki Baat' but 'Maun on Manipur': Congress slams PM Modi

The Congress on Sunday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the situation in Manipur, saying one more 'Mann Ki Baat' but 'Maun' (silence) on Manipur. More than 100 people have lost their lives in the ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki community people in Manipur that broke out a month ago. Taking a dig at Prime Minister Modi, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "So one more Mann ki Baat but Maun on Manipur. The PM patted himself on the back for India's great capabilities in disaster management. What about the entirely man-made (actually self-inflicted) humanitarian disaster that is confronting Manipur." "Still no appeal for peace from him. There is a non-auditable PM-CARES Fund but does the PM even care for Manipur is the real question," Ramesh said on Twitter. In his Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast Sunday, PM Modi said no one has any control over natural calamities, but the strength of disaster management that India has developed over the years, is becomi

Emergency was dark era in country's history: PM Modi on Mann Ki Baat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Emergency was a dark era in the country's history when atrocities were committed on those supporting democracy. He asserted that India is the mother of democracy which holds democratic values and the Constitution supreme and, therefore, "we cannot forget June 25 when Emergency was imposed on us". Emergency was imposed in 1975 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In his Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast, Modi also lauded India's increasing capability to deal with natural disasters as he expressed confidence that the people of Kutch will quickly recover from the devastation caused by cyclone Biparjoy. The prime minister said after the devastating earthquake two decades ago, people had expressed doubts on whether Kutch will be able to recover from the destruction. But the people of Kutch recovered from the disaster, he said. Modi also said that in the last few years, India's disaster management capability has increased and it is becoming a

Sena (UBT) questions PM's silence on Manipur, asks why double-engine failed

The Shiv Sena (UBT) on Saturday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the violence in Manipur, and said the BJP's double engine governments in the north-eastern state and the Centre have failed to bring the situation under control. Manipur has been witnessing ethnic clashes for more than a month. Over the last few days, the state has seen a spurt in violence with a mob vandalising Union Minister of State for External Affairs R K Ranjan Singh's house in Imphal town and trying to burn it down. In an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana', the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said while Hindus are dying in the attacks orchestrated by Kuki militants, the "superpower" (a reference to the Bharatiya Janata Party) championing "so-called Hindutva" has shut its eyes. Aren't Hindus from Manipur Hindus, it asked. "According to the ruling party, there is a double-engine government in Manipur. The BJP claims that if there is a government of one party, which means the BJP, at the state a

Modi govt 'ruining' PSUs, snatching public sector jobs: Mallikarjun Kharge

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday accused the Modi government of "ruining" PSUs and snatching lakhs of government jobs, alleging that the 'Make in India' initiative is only a propaganda to enhance the image of the central government. "By snatching lakhs of government jobs, ruining PSUs..is part of which toolkit, Narendra Modi ji," he asked in a tweet in Hindi. "The high voltage propaganda of 'Make in India' was only to enhance the image, what did the country get from it," he also asked. The Congress chief said the Modi government does not believe that the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) are an important part of the country's economy. "Why did the Modi government snatch 3.84 lakh jobs from only seven PSUs? Why did the jobs of women decrease by 42 per cent in the central government? Why contract and casual government jobs increased by 88 per cent," he also asked. Kharge also shared a 1.5-minute video giving details of the loss of jobs in several public sector ...

Everyone can make promises but Modi govt's 'strong point' is delivery: EAM

Everyone can make promises to people but the Modi government's "strong point" is that it delivers services and projects in a given timeframe, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday. He was speaking during a function held at Badarpur here as part of the BJP's mega outreach campaign -- 'Sampark se Samarthan' -- to mark the completion of the nine years of the Narendra Modi government.
