Fadnavis falsely claiming that warkaris weren't lathi-charged in Pune: Cong

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Monday alleged home minister Devendra Fadnavis was falsely claiming that warkaris- devotees of Lord Vitthal- were not lathi-charged by police in Pune district a day before. "Video clips of the lathi-charge are self-explanatory. What is Fadnavis trying to achieve by making a false claim that no such incident had taken place? The comments of Fadnavis regarding this incident are irresponsible and insensitive, he said. According to police, an argument broke out on Sunday between warkaris and police during a procession at Alandi town when devotees were scrambling to gain entry into Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Samadhi Mandir. Fadnavis had denied reports of lathi-charge and maintained that it was a minor scuffle. Patole said Fadnavis asking political parties not to instigate people over the incident is like "a thief lecturing the police". "If he cannot handle the home department, why is he blaming the warkari community for it?" the Congress lead

Green activists stage 'Chipko' agitation to protest tree cutting in Pune

Hundreds of activists have staged the 'Chalo Chipko' (let's hug trees) agitation in the Mutha riverbed in Maharashtra's Pune city to protest the felling of trees for the ambitious Pune River Front Development project. During the agitation held on Saturday, the protesters carried placards, shouted slogans to save the river, trees and the city and hugged the trees along the riverbank while forming a human chain. The project envisages development of a 44-kilometre stretch of the river bank comprising 22.2 km of the Mula river, 10.4 km of the Mutha river and 11.8 km of the Mula-Mutha river. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the project in March 2022. The activists accused the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) of destroying natural greenery along the riverbank near Bund Garden in the name of its River Rejuvenation Project. A few thousand trees including some rare and old trees are being cut down for a one-km stretch of the riverfront, they alleged. The PMC, howe

The death of Girish Bapat, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Lok Sabha MP from Pune city, on Wednesday has come as a big blow to the national outfit which has now lost three of its sitting lawmakers in this western Maharashtra district in the last four months. Before Bapat (72), two sitting BJP MLAs -- Mukta Tilak (Kasba Peth constituency) and Laxman Jagtap (Chinchwad) -- both in Pune district -- died on December 22, 2022, and January 3, 2023, respectively. In the Assembly bypolls that followed, the BJP managed to retain Chinchwad, where late MLA Jagtap's wife Ashwini defeated the NCP, but it faced rout in the Kasba Peth constituency, where its candidate Hemant Rasane lost to Congress-MVA nominee Ravindra Dhangekar. Credited with strengthening the BJP in Pune city, which was once a Congress bastion, Bapat had cordial relations with leaders across political divide and enjoyed close connection with common people of the state's cultural capital.
