Democrats beat Trump-backed Republican candidates in liberal states

Democrats easily repelled Republicans backed by former President Donald Trump in several left-leaning states Tuesday, while tougher tests that could decide control of Congress and the future of Joe Biden's presidency awaited in more competitive territory. Despite their liberal history, states like Massachusetts, Maryland and Illinois have elected moderate Republican governors in the past. But the Republicans this year appeared to be too conservative in these states, handing Democrats easy victories in midterm elections that could otherwise prove difficult for the party. Massachusetts and Maryland also saw historic firsts: Democrat Maura Healey became the first woman elected as Massachusetts governor, as well as the first openly lesbian governor of any state, and Wes Moore became the first Black governor of Maryland. Both Democrats and Republicans saw opportunity in the other party's strongholds but came up short. In the Colorado Senate race, Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet defeated .

Some in GOP not running for office out of concern for well-being: Biden

President Joe Biden has suggested that more moderate Republicans aren't running for office in part because of their concern about their physical well-being. Biden made the comment on Friday in an MSNBC interview in which he repeated his concerns about mega MAGA Republicans what he describes as a minority of the party that has come under the sway of former President Donald Trump and are pushing disproven claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election and other extreme views. I think one of the reasons there's not more mainstream conservative Republicans running out there is because they're so concerned about not only their physical well-being but also the notion that how can they win when a minority of Republicans are showing up to vote and they're really hardedge, Biden said in the interview. Biden made the comments not long after telling reporters earlier Friday that he believed the momentum will shift back to Democrats in the final days of the mid-term elections and the party would d

Donald Trump: 'King' to some in Pennsylvania, but will it help GOP?

The Trump-Pence sign still hangs on the older building off Main Street in this historic town, a lasting vestige of the campaign fervor that roused voters, including many who still believe the falsehood that the former president didn't lose in 2020 and hope he'll run in 2024. The enthusiasm for Donald Trump's unique brand of nationalist populism has cut into traditional Democratic strongholds like Monongahela, about 25 miles south of Pittsburgh, where brick storefronts and a Slovak fellowship hall dot Main Street and church bells mark the hours of the day. Republicans are counting on political nostalgia for the Trump era as they battle Democrats this fall in Pennsylvania in races for governor, the U.S. Senate and control of Congress. Trump just came along and filled the empty space, said Matti Gruzs, who stitches old blue jeans into tote bags, place mats and other creations she sells at the weekly Farmer's Market downtown. He's still the king, and the kingmaker. Against the backdrop

Joe Biden urges Republican Party to support Disclose Act in Senate voting

US President Joe Biden has urged the Republican Party to support the Disclose Act, which aims at fighting "dark money" by requiring political parties to reveal the names of big donors, ahead of voting on it before the Senate this week. The Disclose Act has already been passed by the US House of Representatives. Biden stressed that 'dark money' erodes public trust which needs to be protected. "Republicans should join Democrats to pass the Disclosure Act and get it on my desk right away. 'Dark money' has become so common in our politics that I believe sunlight is the best disinfectant. I acknowledge it's an issue for both parties," Biden told reporters at the White House. "But here's the key difference Democrats in Congress support more openness and accountability and republicans in Congress so far don't. I hope they'll come around," he said. The US president said Republican Senators should follow the lead of party governors in state legislatures in Tennessee and Wyoming that have

Biden embraces tough tone on 'MAGA Republicans' for threat to democracy

In recent days, President Joe Biden has sharpened his attacks against Donald Trump and the so-called MAGA Republicans for posing a threat to democracy. He's likened the philosophy undergirding the dominant strain of the modern-day GOP to semi-fascism. And Democrats are taking notice. The gloves-off, no-holds-barred approach from Biden as of late has emboldened Democrats across the country, rallying the party faithful ahead of the November elections even as his harshest rhetoric makes some vulnerable incumbents visibly uncomfortable. Biden's increasingly stark warnings about Trump-fuelled elements of the Republican Party are making up the core part of his midterm message, combined with repeated reminders to voters about recent Democratic accomplishments and a promise that democracy can still produce results for the American people. But it's the blistering statements from Biden about his predecessor and adherents of the Make America Great Again philosophy that have given many Democra

Liz Cheney's defeat end of an era for GOP; Donald Trump's party now

Liz Cheney's resounding primary defeat marks the end of an era for the Republican Party as well as her own family legacy, the most high-profile political casualty yet as the party of Lincoln transforms into the party of Trump. The fall of the three-term congresswoman, who has declared it her mission to ensure Donald Trump never returns to the Oval Office, was vividly foreshadowed earlier this year, on the first anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. As the House convened for a moment of silence, Cheney, who is leading the investigation into the insurrection as vice chair of the 1/6 committee, and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, stood almost alone on the Republican side of the House floor. Democratic lawmakers streamed by to shake their hands. Republicans declined to join them. Liz Cheney represents the Republican Party as it used to be. ... All of that is gone now, said Geoff Kabaservice, vice president of political studies at the center-right Niskanen ...
