Two big semiconductor proposals are under process, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Two big semiconductor proposals are under process and expected to take shape in the coming few months, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday. Without divulging specifics of the proposals, the minister said the projects will focus on a special area where India can emerge as a leader at the global level. While speaking with PTI on the sidelines of the groundbreaking ceremony of Micron's semiconductor plant, Vaishnaw said that the global semiconductor company is noticing the progress made by India in the segment and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's capability to execute large and complex policy decisions. "This has developed India as a major trusted geography in which global industry players want to come. We can see in the coming few months at least two more large semiconductor proposals taking shape," Vaishnaw said. He said that there are some specific areas where India can take the lead and the focus of the semiconductor projects will be in areas that can help the country .

High-speed train to connect Ahmedabad and Sanand in next 6 months: Vaishnaw

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday said a high-speed train will start plying between Ahmedabad and Sanand in the next six months. Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of semiconductor company Micron's plant here, Vaishnaw said Vande Bharat Express trains will also halt at Sanand. "A world class train will start between Ahmedabad to Sanand. The high-speed train will start very soon, in the next six months," the Railway Minister said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off Jamnagar-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express on September 24. Talking about the semiconductor ecosystem, Vaishnaw, who also holds the Communications and IT Minister portfolio, said, the demand for semiconductors is going to increase to Rs 5 lakh crore in next few years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision is to build the future of the country with designed and made in India semiconductors, he said. India, US express support for building resilient semiconductor supply chain

India and the US on Friday expressed their support for building a resilient global semiconductor supply chain while reaffirming a pledge to sustain high-level engagements between governments, industries and academic institutions. In a joint statement issued their bilateral talks here, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joseph Biden called upon the two governments to continue the work of transforming the India-US Strategic Partnership across all dimensions based on trust and mutual understanding. The meeting was held soon after Biden arrived in New Delhi to participate in the G20 Summit to be chaired by Prime Minister Modi. The two leaders expressed their support for building resilient global semiconductor supply chains while noting a multi-year initiative of Microchip Technology to invest approximately USD 300 million in expanding its research and development presence in India and also Advanced Micro Device's announcement to invest USD 400 million over the next five years

Intel calls off $5.4 bn semiconductor deal after failing to get approvals

Intel will terminate a USD 5.4 billion deal to acquire Israeli chip manufacturer Tower Semiconductor after China failed to sign off on the deal amid rising tensions with the United States. It was a mutual decision between Intel and Tower, the companies said Wednesday. Intel said that the deal was terminated due to the inability to obtain in a timely manner the regulatory approvals required under the merger agreement. Intel Corp. will pay Tower a termination fee of USD 353 million, the US semiconductor giant said. The deal required regulatory approval from several regulators worldwide including China, but Chinese regulators did not greenlight the deal by the August 15 transaction deadline, even after Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger travelled to China last month in a bid to win them over.
