As many as 109 delegates from 31 countries participated in a session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) which was held from January 29-February 2 in Kochi, the commerce ministry said on Saturday. After the Covid-19 pandemic, CCSCH was the first session of this committee to be conducted physically. In this session, quality standards for five spices -- small cardamom, turmeric, juniper berry, allpice and star anise -- were finalised. CCSCH has forwarded these five standards to the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) recommending for adoption. The next meeting of the committee will be conducted after 18 months. The CAC, jointly established by FAO and WHO, is an international, intergovernmental body with membership of over 194 countries, which is based in Rome and is tasked with formulating internationally accepted standards pertaining to human food. The CCSCH was established as one of the commodity committees under the CAC in 2013.

51.5% agri exports from just 5 products makes sector vulnerable: GTRI

India's agri export basket is dependent on just five commodities including rice and sugar and this makes the sector vulnerable to fluctuations in global prices and demand, a report by economic think tank GTRI said on Monday. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said these five products -- basmati rice, non-basmati rice, sugar, spices, and oil meals -- account for 51.5 per cent of India's total agriculture exports. Furthermore, India grapples with various domestic challenges including infrastructural deficits, quality control issues, and non-tariff barriers, all of which impede the growth and competitiveness of its agricultural sector, it said. "This makes them (agri exports) vulnerable to fluctuations in global prices and demand," it said, adding these commodities also face frequent export bans in India. At present export of non-basmati rice is currently banned from India and India is also fighting at the WTO (World Trade Organisation) to protect subsidies to rice and wheat

The spice industry should work together to explore new markets, strengthen the existing ones and focus on value-added products to reach USD 10 billion exports by 2030, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said on Saturday. "Currently our total exports of spices is at USD 4 billion. Rather than exporting spice in the raw form only, we should look for value-added products as we go forward. We should start building up more markets by exploring new markets and strengthening the existing ones. We should look at creating factories for value-added products to reach USD 10 billion exports by 2030 for the spices sector," Goyal said addressing the World Spice Congress 2023. Citing an example, the minister said, during Covid-19 pandemic, the demand for turmeric grew tremendously because of its medicinal properties and in terms of exports it has the potential to reach USD 2 billion. "If we focus all our energy on tumeric by developing value-added products, turmeric exports alon
