Virat has transformed Chahal into a brave bowler: Vettori

Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori feels India skipper Virat Kohli has instilled a lot of courage in wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, calling it the primary reason for his phenomenal success in limited-overs cricket. Vettori is currently the coach of IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, which Kohli captains. Chahal is currently the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa with 11 scalps in three games. Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of the 'St Moritz Ice Cricket Tournament' here, Vettori attributed Chahal's success to the risks he took during the IPL where he operated on a bowler's graveyard like Chinnaswamy Stadium. "Yuzi is a brave bowler and it's not easy when you are playing a lot of IPL matches at a small ground like the Chinnaswamy, which is conducive to batting," Vettori said. "He is still prepared to attack the batsmen and this is a mindset that Virat has instilled in him while leading him at the RCB and now India. Surely,

India eye milestone win, South Africa hope for revival

India's indomitable cricket team looks set for a landmark series triumph but an injury- ravaged South Africa would hope for some A B de Villiers magic to halt the visitors' charge in the fourth one-dayer, here tomorrow. With an unassailable 3-0 lead in hand, India need just one more win to claim their maiden ODI series triumph on the South African soil. The closest they came was in 2010-11, when under Mahendra Singh Dhoni, they shot into a 2-1 lead only to lose the five- match series 3-2. India had previously broken into unchartered territory at Newlands when, for the first time since they began touring here in 1992-93, they won three matches in a bilateral ODI engagement in South Africa. A fourth consecutive win will also cement their spot as the no.1 side in ICC ODI Rankings. Before the third ODI, Shikhar Dhawan had highlighted that the team wants to win every game ahead of them, building on victory in the third Test here, and there would be no complacency in the ...

India series showing SA's Gen-Next not yet ready: Graeme Smith

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith feels that Indias complete dominance in the ongoing ODI series is an indicator that the Gen-Next of Proteas is "not quite ready" to take on quality opposition. India are on cusp of a first ever series win on South African soil across formats as they lead 3-0 in the six-match ODI series. Skipper Virat Kohli (318 runs with two hundreds) along with wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal (11 wickets) and Kuldeep Yadav (10) have contributed significantly to India's emphatic wins so far. "India team is very deservingly 3-0 up in the series. While South Africa have lost three key players (AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock) to injuries but it also showed that next generation of South African cricketers is not quite ready to take it on," Smith told PTI on the sidelines of St. Moritz Ice Cricket tournament . "I think Cricket South Africa needs to think how they would want to blood and develop the youngsters in order to get them ..

47 Russians lose late court bid to compete at Olympics

Forty-seven Russians implicated in doping lost a last-minute court bid to take part in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Friday, just hours before the opening ceremony. The applicants, who included Korean-born speed skater Victor An, had asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to overturn an International Olympic Committee decision not to invite them to South Korea. "The applications filed by Russian athletes and coaches have been dismissed," CAS secretary general Matthieu Reeb told a packed news conference. The IOC was swift to welcome the decision, the latest twist in the Russian doping scandal, saying the ruling "supports the fight against doping and brings clarity for all athletes". The Russian situation has proved highly contentious in the build-up to Pyeongchang, after their team was banned but a certain number of "clean" Russian athletes were allowed to take part as neutrals. Fifteen of those who lost their bids on Friday were among a group of 28 who ...

Coach may have known about Nassar in 2011: Raisman

Olympic gold medallist Aly Raisman said Thursday that former USA team coach John Geddert may have been aware of sexual abuse by Larry Nassar five years before the doctor's arrest. Raisman, one of several US Olympians abused by Nassar who has been jailed, told CNN in an interview that team-mates had discussed their abuse openly in front of Geddert in 2011, who did not appear to respond. "We would talk about it amongst ourselves," Raisman said. "And one of my teammates described in graphic detail what Nassar had done to her the night before. And John Geddert was in the car with us and he just didn't say anything." Raisman said she was unaware what action if any Geddert took after the conversation. "I don't know what he did or didn't do from there," she said. "I know he didn't ask us any questions, but that is just why we need the full, independent investigation to get to the bottom of who knew about this." Geddert coached the US women's team to the gold medal at the 2012 ..
