Gambhir brushes aside talks of joining politics

Former Indian cricketer, who recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, has brushed aside the reports claiming that he would be joining politics.The 37-year-old termed such reports as "rumour" adding that there is no truth in them."I never thought of this (joining politics). I did start social work not because that I am interested in politics. I do that because of the belief that it could change the lives of people. And this is what matters," Gambhir told media."The reports of me joining the politics all are rumor and there is no truth in it," he added.Gambhir did not get a farewell match but the former opening batsman believes that this is not a matter of concern for him. Pune get another win and revenge on Goa

FC Pune City produced a spirited display to register a 2-0 win over FC Goa in a Hero Indian Super League clash here Tuesday. A terrific striker from Marcelinho in the 74th minute and a late penalty from Marko Stankovic (90+4') separated the two sides as Pune kept consecutive clean sheets. Krishna Poonia is now an MLA in Rajasthan

Beginning a new innings, discus thrower Krishna Poonia, the 2010 CWG gold medallist, on Tuesday won the Sadulpur assembly seat in Rajasthan defeating sitting BSP MLA Manoj Nyangali. Contesting on a Congress ticket, Poonia won by a healthy margin of 18084 votes after receiving 70020 votes. It was Poonia's second attempt to get entry in the state legislature, having suffered defeat in the previous elections. The Congress won 101 seats in the house of 199 while the BJP won 73. The 36-year-old athlete had hurled the disc to 61.51m to claim a gold medal at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. She had finished sixth at the 2012 London Olympics with her best throw of 63.62m, coming in the fifth attempt.

Ramesh Powar, whose controversial tenure as women's coach ended on November 30, on Tuesday reapplied for the job after receiving strong support from T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her deputy Smriti Mandhana.
