Scientists have found a way to identify extremists associated with terror groups like ISIS on social media, even before they post threatening content on their accounts. The number and size of online extremist groups using social networks to harass users, recruit new members, and incite violence is rapidly increasing. While social media platforms are working to combat this (in 2016, Twitter reported it had shut down 360,000 ISIS accounts) they traditionally rely heavily on users' reports to identify these accounts. Once an account has been suspended, there is little that can be done to prevent a user from opening up a new account, or multiple accounts. "Social media has become a powerful platform for extremist groups, ranging from ISIS to white nationalist "alt-right" groups," said Tauhid Zaman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). "These groups use social networks to spread hateful propaganda and incite violence and terror attacks, making them a threat to the general ...

Scientists have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can identify machine-generated fake reviews on online e-commerce websites. Sites like TripAdvisor, Yelp and Amazon display user reviews of products and services. Nine out of ten people read these peer reviews and trust what they see, researchers said. However, not all reviews are legitimate. Fake reviews written by real people are already common on review sites, but the amount of fakes generated by machines is likely to increase substantially. According to doctoral student Mika Juuti at Aalto University in the US, fake reviews based on algorithms are nowadays easy, accurate and fast to generate. Most of the time, people are unable to tell the difference between genuine and machine-generated fake reviews. "Misbehaving companies can either try to boost their sales by creating a positive brand image artificially or by generating fake negative reviews about a competitor," said Juuti. "The motivation is, of course, ...

The mobile multi-joint exosuit could also enhance mobility and quality of living for people suffering from neurodegenerative disorders and for the elderly. When a wearer begins walking, the system measures the power and gradually adjusts controller parameters until it finds those that maximise the exosuit's effects based on the wearer's individual gait mechanics. An automatic tuning method to customise the suit's assistance based on how an individual's body is responding to it, and demonstrated significant energy savings. The multi-joint soft exosuit consists of textile apparel components worn at the waist, thighs, and calves, according to the study published in the Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation (JNER).
