The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will issue its recommendation on satellite spectrum allocation methodology and other pending matters after the appointment of a regular chairperson, an official source said. The position of Trai chairperson has been vacant since October 1 after the tenure of P D Vaghela ended in September. Trai member Meenakshi Gupta is handling the additional charge of chairperson of the regulatory body. "Trai chairperson will decide on the recommendation. We are almost ready with recommendations on satellite spectrum allocation but the final call will be taken by the chairperson," a senior Trai official said. The consultation paper "Assignment of spectrum for Space-based Communication Services" follows reference made to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India by the Department of Telecom (DoT) seeking the regulator's recommendation on the contentious issue of spectrum allocation to satellite companies through auction. "In the present consultation paper, Trai has considered all the spectrum bands relevant for space-based communication services as indicated by DoT... In this consultation paper, specific issues have been raised for consideration of stakeholders. "Written comments on the issues raised in the consultation paper are invited from the stakeholders by May 4, 2023 and counter comments by May 18, 2023," Trai said. Mobile operators' body COAI on Tuesday said that sector regulator's instructions to telcos to report call drop data even state-wise entails several administrative and execution "difficulties" on ground, and that reporting should continue at LSA (Licensed Service Area) level. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), last week at a review meeting, asked telecom operators to report call drop data at state level too, amid rising instances of service quality issues and consumer complaints. The industry association COAI on Tuesday said it has urged Trai to "reconsider" the move and continue with LSA-wise reporting, SP Kochhar, Director General, COAI (Cellular Operators' Association of India), told reporters. COAI's members including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Kochhar said that telecom operators fully "support giving the best services to subscribers with whatever it takes", but pointed to "administrative problems" that would arise in reporting call drop data .
