How lessons learned from 2016 campaign led US to be open about Iran hack

The 2016 presidential campaign was entering its final months and seemingly all of Washington was abuzz with talk about how Russian hackers had penetrated the email accounts of Democrats, triggering the release of internal communications that seemed designed to boost Donald Trump's campaign and hurt Hillary Clinton's. Yet there was a notable exception: The officials investigating the hacks were silent. When they finally issued a statement, one month before the election, it was just three paragraphs and did little more than confirm what had been publicly suspected that there had been a brazen Russian effort to interfere in the vote. This year, there was another foreign hack, but the response was decidedly different. US security officials acted more swiftly to name the culprit, detailing their findings and blaming a foreign adversary this time, Iran just over a week after Trump's campaign revealed the attack. They accused Iranian hackers of targeting the presidential campaigns of b

Harris campaign raises $540 mn, sees surge of donations during DNC

Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign says it has now raised USD 540 million for its election battle against Republican nominee former President Donald Trump. The campaign has had no problems getting supporters to open their wallets since President Joe Biden announced on July 21 he was ending his campaign and quickly endorsed Harris. The campaign said it saw a surge of donations during last week's Democratic National Convention in Chicago where Harris and her vice presidential running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, accepted their nominations. Just before Vice President Harris' acceptance speech Thursday night, we officially crossed the USD 500 million mark," campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon wrote in a memo released by the campaign on Sunday. "Immediately after her speech, we saw our best fundraising hour since launch day. Trump has also proven to be a formidable fundraiser, but appears to be outpaced in her month-old campaign. US elections: Harris' racial, cultural firsts were onstage throughout DNC

Vice President Kamala Harris, on the night she became the first woman of Black and South Asian heritage to be a major party's presidential nominee, didn't explicitly mention the history she would make if elected to the White House. Instead, she opted for direct mentions of her multiracial background and upbringing. She paid tribute to her roots as the daughter of a brown woman and Caribbean man. She honoured the multicultural village of aunties and uncles in California's Bay Area. And following her speech, the relatives who joined her onstage for the traditional balloon drop included people of different and often multiple, overlapping races, like Harris herself. Western attire and saris were worn side by side. It was a way for Harris and others at the convention to display her personal story while offering a visual political message that could appeal to a broad swath of people who see themselves in families like hers. Around 12.5 per cent of US residents identified as two or more ...

Iranian hackers targeted WhatsApp of staffers in Biden, Trump admins: Meta

The same Iranian hacking group believed to have targeted both the Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns, tried to go after the WhatsApp accounts of staffers in the administrations of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, Meta Platforms said Friday. Meta said it discovered the network of hackers, who posed as tech support agents for companies including Microsoft and Google, after individuals who received the suspicious WhatsApp messages reported them. Meta's investigators linked the activity to the same network blamed for the hacking incident reported by Trump's campaign. The FBI this week said a hack by Iran of the Trump campaign and an attempted breach of the Biden-Harris campaign was part of a broader Iranian effort to interfere with the U.S. presidential election. A statement Friday from Meta, the parent of Facebook and Instagram, said that the hackers had tried to target the WhatsApp account of individuals in the Middle East, the United States and the

Harris is 'tough, experienced and ready' to be president, says Tim Walz

Kamala Harris is "tough, experienced and is ready" to be the next president of the United States, her running mate Tim Walz has said, stressing that they will "turn the page" on Donald Trump. Minnesota Governor Walz's remarks came as he accepted his party's nomination for vice president at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday. It's the honour of my life to accept your nomination for vice president of the United States, Walz, 60, said. He also thanked Vice President Harris for inviting him on to the ticket and thanked President Joe Biden for four years of strong, historic leadership. Kamala Harris is ready. Our job is to get in the trenches and to the blocking and tackling one inch at a time, one yard at a time, Walz, running mate of Harris said in his acceptance speech. He then led the supporters in a rallying cry for their 2024 campaign: I don't know about you, I'm ready to turn the page on these guys. Go ahead, say it with me, We're not going back!' Walz t

Harris receives support from top Democratic leaders in bid to White House

Kamala Harris has received unprecedented support from three top leaders of the party -- former president Bill Clinton, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi -- in her bid to break the last glass ceiling of the United States. All three leaders, who have nationwide appeal, in prime-time speeches on Wednesday described Harris as the best individual who can lead the country right now. Clinton said Harris is the only candidate in this race with the vision, the experience, the temperament and the will. "And yes - the sheer joy - to do that on good and bad days. To be our voice, said Clinton in his address to the Democratic National Convention here. Harris, 59, is scheduled to formally accept the Democratic Party's presidential nomination on Thursday to take on Republican rival Donald Trump, 78, in the November 5 election. If elected, Harris, who is of Indian and African heritage, would break one of the highest glass ceilings left for women in the ..

Democrats turn toward Harris at DNC as Obamas and Emhoff take centre stage

Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama will speak Tuesday on the second day of the Democratic National Convention, as the party draws on two of its biggest stars to help shift attention toward Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign against Republican Donald Trump. Also speaking Tuesday are second gentleman Doug Emhoff and Sens. Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, and Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent beloved by progressives. And in an appearance perhaps intended to needle Trump, his former press secretary Stephanie Grisham now a harsh critic of her former boss will also take the stage. I never thought I'd be speaking at a Democratic convention," Grisham said in a statement ahead of her appearance. But, after seeing firsthand who Donald Trump really is, and the threat he poses to our country, I feel very strongly about speaking out. The Obamas topped Tuesday's programme, but the diverse lineup underscored the breadth of the political coalition that Harris'

Trump campaigns to 'make America safe again' as DNC zeroes in on his felony

Former President Donald Trump pledged Tuesday to Make America Safe Again" while campaigning in Michigan as the Democrats who gathered in Chicago to nominate Kamala Harris branded him a career criminal. As part of a battleground campaign swing designed to counter the Democratic National Convention, Trump stood alongside sheriff's deputies in the city of Howell and tarred Harris, a former San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general, as the ringleader of a Marxist attack on law enforcement across the country. Kamala Harris will deliver crime, chaos, destruction and death, Trump said in one of many generalizations about an America under Harris. You'll see levels of crime that you've never seen before. ... I will deliver law, order, safety and peace. Trump has sought in recent weeks to blunt the enthusiasm that Harris has attracted since President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and endorsed her. That has involved both dark predictions about what electing Harr
