Republicans release initial impeachment inquiry report on President Biden

House Republicans have released their initial impeachment inquiry report into President Joe Biden, alleging an abuse of power and obstruction of justice in the financial dealings of his son Hunter Biden and family associates. The nearly yearlong inquiry by Republicans stops short of alleging any criminal wrongdoing by the president. Instead, the almost 300-page report out Monday ahead of the Democratic National Convention covers familiar ground, asserting the Biden family traded on its brand in business ventures in corrupt ways that rise to the Constitution's high bar for impeachment. With Biden no longer running for reelection, next steps are highly uncertain. House Republicans have not had support from their own ranks to actually impeach the president, and removal by the Senate is even further afield. Many Republicans prefer to focus attention on the Democratic Party's presumptive presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, with some probes getting underway. The White Hous

Trump zigzags between economic remarks, insults at rally in Pennsylvania

Former President Donald Trump on Saturday repeatedly swerved from a message focused on the economy into non sequiturs and personal attacks, including thrice declaring that he was better looking than Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump wound back and forth between hitting his points on economic policy and delivering a smattering of insults and impressions of President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron as he held a rally in northeastern Pennsylvania. The former president has seemed to struggle to adjust to his new opponent after Democrats replaced their nominee. Over the past week, he has diverged during campaign appearances away from the policies he was billed to speak about and instead diverted to a rotation of familiar attack lines and insults. As he attacked Democrats for inflation at the top of his speech, Trump asked his crowd of supporters, You don't mind if I go off teleprompter for a second, do you? Joe Biden hates her. Joseph Costello, a spokesperson for the ..

Beyond childless cat ladies, JD Vance's long quest to encourage more births

Five summers ago, Donald Trump's running mate JD Vance then a 34-year-old memoirist and father of a 2-year-old boy took the stage at a conservative conference and tackled an issue that would become a core part of his political brand: the United States' declining fertility rate. Our people aren't having enough children to replace themselves. That should bother us, Vance told the gathering in Washington. He outlined the obvious concern that Social Security depends on younger workers' contributions and then said, We want babies not just because they are economically useful. We want more babies because children are good. And we believe children are good, because we are not sociopaths. Vance repeatedly expressed alarm about declining birth rates as he launched his political career in 2021 with a bid for the U.S. Senate in Ohio. His criticism then of Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, and other high-profile Democrats as childless cat ladies who didn't

Trump appreciates support from Nikki Haley, refuses advice on campaigning

Republican presidential candidate and former president Donald Trump said he appreciates the support he has received from Indian American and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley but hasn't taken her advice related to campaigning. "I fought Nikki (Haley) very hard. I beat her in her own state by legendary numbers. I get along with her fine. I appreciate that she endorsed me," Trump said to reporters at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, on Thursday. Trump was responding to questions about a recent interview of Haley in which she said that the Republican presidential nominee should quit whining about his Democratic opponent Vice President Kamala Harris and instead focus on policy issues. "You can't win on those things. American people are smart. Treat them like they're smart. It's not about her. It's about the American people. Talk to them and let them know you need their vote," Haley told Fox News in an interview. "I think I'm doing a very calm campaign. I mean, we're he

Trump goes off topic again: Do voters care about economy or Harris' laugh?

Donald Trump sought to recalibrate his presidential comeback bid with a North Carolina rally focused on the economy, but he struggled to stay focused on a topic that voters identify as a top concern. Trump on Wednesday opened his speech with off-script attacks on the media and aired his grievances over the Democrats swapping Vice President Kamala Harris for President Joe Biden atop their ticket. He referred to San Francisco, where Harris was once the district attorney, as "unlivable" and went after his rival in deeply personal terms, questioning her intelligence and saying she has "the laugh of a crazy person. You know why she hasn't done an interview? She's not smart. She's not intelligent. And we've gone through enough of that with this guy, crooked Joe," Trump said, using the nickname he often uses for Biden. Trump said that his aides wanted him to focus on economic concerns but that he was not sure he agreed the economy is the most important issue of the election. Trump spoke a

Google says Iranian group trying to access mails linked to US prez campaign

Google has said that an Iranian group linked to the country's Revolutionary Guard has tried to infiltrate the personal email accounts of roughly a dozen people linked to President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump since May. The tech company's threat intelligence arm on Wednesday said the group is still actively targeting people associated with Biden, Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, who replaced Biden as the Democratic candidate last month when he dropped out. It said those targeted have included current and former government officials, as well as presidential campaign affiliates. The new report from Google's Threat Analysis Group affirms and expands on a Microsoft report released Friday that revealed suspected Iranian cyber intrusion in this year's US presidential election. It sheds light on how foreign adversaries are ramping up their efforts to disrupt the election that is now less than three months away. Google's report said its threat researchers detected and

Kamala Harris phoney, more incompetent than Biden, Trump tells Elon Musk

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris is a third-rate phoney candidate and more incompetent than her boss President Joe Biden, her Republican rival in the November election, Donald Trump, has said. In a much-anticipated audio-only interview with billionaire tech magnate Elon Musk on Monday on his social media platform X which was delayed by more than 40 minutes due to technical difficulties, the 78-year-old former president said, She is a radical left lunatic," as he alleged that she wants to be more Trump than Trump. Launching a scathing attack on the 59-year-old US Vice President, Trump described Harris as a third-rate phoney candidate. He reiterated his allegation that Biden being replaced by Harris as a presidential candidate of the Democratic party was a coup. Musk agreed with the former president and said, "Her behaviour is far left. "She (Harris) had three and a half years, and by the way, they have another five months that they can do something. But they won't do ..

News outlets leaked insider data from Trump's campaign, chose not to print

At least three news outlets were leaked confidential material from inside the Donald Trump campaign, including its report vetting JD Vance as a vice presidential candidate. So far, each has refused to reveal any details about what they received. Instead, Politico, The New York Times and The Washington Post have written about a potential hack of the campaign and described what they had in broad terms. Their decisions stand in marked contrast to the 2016 presidential campaign, when a Russian hack exposed emails to and from Hillary Clinton's campaign manager, John Podesta. The website Wikileaks published a trove of these embarrassing missives, and mainstream news organisations covered them avidly. Politico wrote over the weekend about receiving emails starting July 22 from a person identified as Robert that included a 271-page campaign document about Vance and a partial vetting report on Sen. Marco Rubio, who was also considered as a potential vice president. Both Politico and the Post

US election: Harris cautiously rolls out policy, aims to outmaneuver Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris is trying to outmaneuver former President Donald Trump and address old vulnerabilities on her policy positions as she starts to fill in how she would govern if elected in November. Vice presidents rarely have policy portfolios of their own and almost always set aside any views that differ from those of the Oval Office occupant. Now, after four years of following President Joe Biden's lead, Harris is taking a cautious approach to unveiling a policy vision in her own right. But her surprise ascendance to the top of the ticket after Biden dropped his reelection bid also means her policy platform is being pulled together just as quickly. When Harris inherited Biden's political operation in late July, the campaign's website was quietly scrubbed of the six-point issues page that framed the race against Trump, from expanding voting protections to restoring nationwide access to abortion. Instead, Harris has peppered her speeches so far heavy on biography for

Harris, Trump paint different pictures for voters as campaign intensifies

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are painting much different pictures as they meet with voters on the campaign trail. Harris, by turns, is pushing joy -- branding the Democratic ticket, which includes her running mate, Minnesota Gov Tim Walz, as joyful warriors. Trump, meanwhile, has promoted a gloomier view for Republicans, saying at a news conference last week that, We have a lot of bad things coming up. Voters will hear more from both candidates and their running mates in the days ahead. Walz will hold his first solo events this week, travelling on Tuesday to Los Angeles to speak at the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees convention, before attending a series of fundraisers around the country. Trump is set to do a live interview Monday on X, the social platform from which he was banned for nearly two years following the Jan 6, 2021, storming of the US Capitol. From Biden to Gabbard, what Harris' past debates show before Trump faceoff

Vice President Kamala Harris has repeatedly taunted her opponent's seeming reluctance to debate, telling a series of raucous audiences about Donald Trump's criticisms of her: As the saying goes, if you've got something to say, say it to my face. After first backing out of an agreement, Trump reversed himself and said he'd meet Harris on September 10 for an event hosted by ABC. That sets up a long-anticipated faceoff between the Democratic and Republican nominees and, indeed, the chance for both of them to deliver their attack lines directly at one another. Sharing a stage with Trump presents a critical chance for Harris to define herself and her opponent in a truncated campaign, with many open questions about her policy positions. But it also sets up a major test one that President Joe Biden failed badly enough that he ended his campaign and made way for her. A former San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general, Harris has long presented her debating prowess as

Harris introduces new mate Walz as 'vice president America deserves'

Vice President Kamala Harris introduced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to the nation on Tuesday at a raucous rally in Philadelphia just hours after announcing the affable politician as her running mate. I set out to find a partner who can help build this brighter future, Harris said, joking that the past two weeks since she stepped into the race have been something of a whirlwind. I'm here today because I've found such a leader." In choosing the 60-year-old Walz, Harris is elevating a Midwestern governor, military veteran and union supporter who helped enact an ambitious Democratic agenda for his state, including sweeping protections for abortion rights and generous aid to families. It was her biggest decision yet as the Democratic nominee and she went with a broadly palatable choice someone who says politics should have more joy and who deflects dark and foreboding rhetoric from Republicans with a lighter touch, a strategy that the campaign has been increasingly turning to since Harris

Kamala Harris selects Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for vice president

Vice President Kamala Harris picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate on Tuesday, according to three people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. In choosing Walz, she is turning to a Midwestern governor, military veteran and union supporter who helped enact an ambitious Democratic agenda for his state, including sweeping protections for abortion rights and generous aid to families. Harris hopes to shore up her campaign's standing across the upper Midwest, a critical region in presidential politics that often serves as a buffer for Democrats seeking the White House. The party remains haunted by Republican Donald Trump's wins in Michigan and Wisconsin in 2016. Trump lost those states in 2020 but has zeroed in on them as he aims to return to the presidency this year and is expanding his focus to Minnesota. Walz, 60, is joining Harris during one of the most turbulent periods in modern American politics, promising an unpredictable campaign ahead. ...
