Ex US Prez Trump mocks Haley's first name; refers to her by her first name

Former US president Donald Trump has lobbed racially charged attacks at his Indian-American Republican rival Nikki Haley by repeatedly referring to her as Nimbra", in an apparent intentional misspelling of her birth name. Trump's attack against Haley, a daughter of Indian immigrants who served as his UN ambassador, comes days before a hotly contested New Hampshire primary that could determine the trajectory of the party's presidential nomination contest. Haley, 52, whose parents moved to the United States in the 1960s, was born Nimarata Nikki Randhawa. The former South Carolina governor has long used her middle name Nikki and adopted the surname Haley after her marriage in 1996. But Trump, 77, repeatedly referred to Haley as Nimbra in a rant on his Truth Social account, adding her to the list of foes he has targeted with racist attacks. He also insisted she doesn't have what it takes to be president. Reminiscent of his spurious claims about former president Barack Obama's citizen

Haley vs Trump in New Hampshire as DeSantis withdraws from next primary

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signalled that he would largely bypass the New Hampshire primary next week and instead would focus on South Carolina where the Republican presidential primary is scheduled for February 24. The move makes it a direct contest between former president Donald Trump and Indian American Nikki Haley for the crucial Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire on January 23. The latest poll released Wednesday showed that Trump and Haley are tied in this State with both polling 40 per cent each. New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu has endorsed Haley. Trump won the first Republican presidential caucus this Monday by bagging more than 51 per cent of the votes. DeSantis came second with over 21 per cent of the votes and Haley followed him with 19 per cent of the votes. On Wednesday the DeSantis campaign signalled that it would largely skip campaigning in New Hampshire and instead pour its entire resources and energy into South Carolina, which also happens

Maine judge delays decision on removing Trump from ballot until SC rules

A Maine judge on Wednesday paused an election official's decision on former President Donald Trump's ballot status to allow time for the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on a similar case in Colorado. Trump's lawyers appealed in state court when Secretary of State Shenna Bellows removed the Republican front-runner from the presidential primary ballot but then asked the judge to pause proceedings to allow the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on the Colorado case, which could render the lawsuit moot. Superior Court Michaela Murphy denied Trump's request to stay the proceedings, but she sent the case back to the secretary of state with instructions to await the outcome of the U.S. Supreme Court case before issuing a new ruling withdrawing, modifying or upholding her original decision. In her decision, the judge said that the issues raised in the Maine case mirror the issues raised in the Colorado case before the U.S. Supreme Court. She wrote that her decision minimizes any potentially destabilizin

I am the only candidate who can avert 'Trump-Biden nightmare': Nikki Haley

Indian-American Nikki Haley, who finished third in the Iowa caucuses, has said that she is the only Republican candidate who could take on frontrunner Donald Trump and incumbent President Joe Biden and avert a "Trump-Biden nightmare". The Iowa caucuses on Monday formally kicked off the beginning of the long process by which the Republicans and Democrats choose their nominees for the presidential election on November 5. Haley, the former US Ambassador to the UN, came a close third with nearly 20 per cent of the votes polled. Former US president Trump won the caucus with more than 50 per cent of the votes, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came in second with 21 per cent. Fellow Indian-American Vivek Ramaswamy secured 7.7 per cent of the total votes polled and suspended his presidential campaign. The two-time South Carolina governor said her presidential campaign is the best hope to avert a rematch between Trump and incumbent President Biden, a Democrat, in the presidential ...

Republican caucuses: Donald Trump wins Iowa's leadoff voting contest

Donald Trump has won Iowa's leadoff presidential caucuses. The former president's victory on Monday night gives him a strong start in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination as the contest moves to New Hampshire. Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are Trump's most prominent primary rivals. They are aiming for a second-place finish in Iowa that would give them at least some momentum heading into future races. HOW AP CALLED TRUMP THE WINNER OF IOWA'S CAUCUSES AP declared Trump the winner of the Iowa caucuses based on an analysis of early returns as well as results of AP VoteCast, a survey of voters who planned to caucus on Monday night. Both showed Trump with an insurmountable lead. Initial results from eight counties showed Trump with far more than half of the total votes counted as of 8.31 pm ET, with the rest of the field trailing far behind. These counties include rural areas that are demographically and politically similar to a l

I am not interested in VP post, says presidential candidate Nikki Haley

Indian-American senior Republican Party leader Nikki Haley, the lone woman in the party's presidential race, has said she is not interested in being the vice president, asserting that she's running to be the next US president and is contending "to win". Haley's remarks came ahead of the Iowa caucuses on Monday, which formally kicks off the beginning of the long process by which the Republicans and Democrats choose their nominees for the presidential election on November 5. Replying to a question about how she felt about some voters saying they would prefer her as a vice president rather than a president, the 51-year-old former US Ambassador to the UN said, I don't play for a second. I've never played for a second. I'm not going to start now." "I'm not interested in being vice president. I'm running to be president, and I'm running to win, and we will, the former South Carolina governor said in a CBS News interview. With the Republican contest to choose the nominee for the November

Vivek Ramaswamy ruled out as Trump's running mate by ex-president's advisor

Donald Trump's top adviser has ruled out Vivek Ramaswamy as the ex-US president's running mate after the Republican frontrunner publicly criticised the Indian-American presidential candidate ahead of the Iowa caucus. The Iowa caucuses, which begin on Monday, formally kick off the beginning of the long process by which the Republicans and Democrats choose their nominees for the presidential election on November 5. Trump's top adviser, Jason Miller, told the New York Post that voters could probably rule out 38-year-old biotech entrepreneur Ramaswamy as the ex-president's running mate. Pretty safe to say it won't be Vivek, Miller was quoted as saying in the report. On Saturday, Trump, 77, lashed out at Ramaswamy, who is most closely aligned with him in the race for the Republican nomination, accusing him of deceitful campaign tricks". The former president's criticism stemmed from shirts that Ramaswamy's campaign is handing out that say 'Save Trump, Vote Vivek' on them. Ramaswamy pos

Bernardo Arevalo sworn in as Guatemala's president despite challenges

Bernardo Arevalo was sworn in as Guatemala's president on Monday minutes after midnight despite months of efforts to derail his inauguration, including foot-dragging and rising tensions right up until the transfer of power. Arevalo arrives in the presidency after winning August's elections by a comfortable margin. But nothing has been straightforward since, with Attorney General Consuelo Porras and the establishment forces observers say she represents throwing one legal challenge after another at Arevalo and his party. Despite hundreds of Arevalo's supporters pressuring lawmakers to follow the constitution, even clashing with riot police outside the congress building on Sunday, the inauguration process dragged for hours into the night before he took the oath of office just past midnight. A progressive academic-turned-politician and son of a Guatemalan president credited with implementing key social reforms in the mid-20th century, Arevalo takes office with expectations of confrontin

Your votes can help me punish enemies, says Trump to Iowa Republicans

Donald Trump implored his supporters on Sunday to brave frigid temperatures and deliver him a decisive victory in Monday's Iowa caucuses, saying their vote would help bring to Washington the retribution he has repeatedly promised if he returns to the White House. The former president has set sky-high expectations for his own performance in the first contest of the race for the Republican presidential nomination. He spent the day before the caucuses trying to ensure he meets them. His main GOP rivals all spent Sunday in Iowa as well, making last-minute appeals to Iowans open to hearing them. At a rally in Indianola, Trump said his supporters could fight back against his political enemies, claiming that the four indictments he faces were driven by politics and renewing his false claims about the 2020 election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Many in the crowd wore white and gold caps identifying them as Trump caucus captains who will help round up support for him Monday night. "These .

Trump can wait to testify at sex abuse victim's defamation trial: Judge

Former President Donald Trump can wait a week to testify at a New York defamation trial where he could face millions of dollars in damages after a jury concluded that he sexually abused a columnist in the 1990s, a federal judge said on Sunday. Judge Lewis A Kaplan issued a one-page order saying Trump could testify on January 22 even if the trial that starts on Tuesday is over by Thursday, except for testimony by the Republican front-runner in this year's presidential race. He said he previously denied Trump's request to delay the start of the trial by a week so Trump could attend the funeral Thursday of his mother-in-law because it would disrupt and inconvenience prospective jurors, lawyers, court staff and security, who were notified of the trial date seven months ago. The judge also noted that he has learned that Trump, even while seeking to postpone the trial, had scheduled an evening campaign appearance on Wednesday in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He said Trump's lawyers notified

Donald Trump's civil fraud trial in New York heads to closing arguments

Donald Trump 's New York civil fraud trial is back in session Thursday for closing arguments but it won't be the former president doing the talking. Trump, the leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination, had angled to deliver his own closing remarks in the courtroom, in addition to summations from his legal team, but a judge nixed that unusual plan Wednesday. That will leave the last words to the lawyers in a trial over allegations that Trump exaggerated his wealth on financial statements he provided to banks, insurance companies and others. New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, wants the judge to impose $370 million in penalties. Trump says he did nothing wrong, didn't lie about his fortune and is the victim of political persecution. The former president had hoped to make that argument personally, but the judge initially open to the idea said no after a Trump lawyer missed a deadline for agreeing to ground rules. Among them, Judge Arthur Engoron

Haley, DeSantis quickly tear into each other's records in Republican debate

Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis called each other liars and insulted each other's records and character in the opening minutes of Wednesday's Republican primary debate, underscoring the high stakes for each of them with less than a week before the Iowa caucuses. We don't need another mealy-mouthed politician who just tells you what she thinks you want to hear, just to try to get your vote and then to get in office and to do her donors' bidding, DeSantis said in an early barb. "He's upset that his campaign is exploding," Haley said in her reply. The former UN ambassador directed viewers to a website her campaign created chronicling what she said were DeSantis' lies. The Florida governor in turn tried to send people to his website, where he said he collected "all the greatest hits of Haley's false statements. Standing at lecterns an arm's length apart, DeSantis and Haley both sought a strong debate performance in Iowa without their lower-polling rivals by their side to lift their campai

Any charges against me will open 'Pandora's box', says Donald Trump

Former President Donald Trump has long vowed to prosecute President Joe Biden if Trump wins November's election and the two trade places. He upped the stakes dramatically Tuesday, contending that if criminal charges against him aren't dropped, any current and future ex-presidents also could be prosecuted. I feel that as a president, you have to have immunity, very simple, Trump said after a court hearing where a panel of three federal judges seemed deeply skeptical of his attorneys' arguments that presidents have immunity from prosecution for official business. It's the opening of a Pandora's box and it's a very, very sad thing that's happened with this whole situation. Trump said Biden might not be the only one targeted. Former President Barack Obama could end up being prosecuted, he said, citing Obama administration drone strikes in the Middle East that killed a U.S. citizen who was identified as a leader of the terrorist group al-Qaida and that man's 16-year-old son, also a U.S. .

Trump to return to federal court as judges hear arguments on his immunity

Donald Trump is set to return for the first time in months to the federal courthouse in Washington as an appeals court hears arguments Tuesday on whether the former president is immune from prosecution on charges that he plotted to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The outcome of the arguments carries enormous ramifications both for the landmark criminal case against Trump and for the broader, and legally untested, question of whether an ex-president can be prosecuted for acts committed in the White House. It will also likely set the stage for further appeals before the U.S. Supreme Court, which last month declined a request to weigh in but could still get involved later. A swift decision is crucial for special counsel Jack Smith and his team, who are eager to get the case now paused pending the appeal to trial before the November election. But Trump's lawyers, in addition to seeking to get the case dismissed, are hoping to benefit from a protracted appeals process that ..
