Cong on SP's bypoll snub: Ticket discussions ongoing, possibilities ahead

Congress strategists on Sunday said discussions on ticket distribution are ongoing with the Samajwadi Party and there are "possibilities ahead", days after its ally declared candidates for six of the 10 Uttar Pradesh assembly seats where bypolls are scheduled. The SP had announced candidates for six of the 10 Uttar Pradesh assembly seats after the Congress lost the assembly polls in Haryana. The Congress has been demanding five seats in the bypolls for which the schedule is yet to be announced. Congress national general secretary and Uttar Pradesh in-charge, Avinash Pandey told PTI, "If the results do not meet our expectations, it is natural for disappointment to arise among our workers and leaders. However, we are committed to our objectives in UP - the era of jungle raj must come to an end." A Congress worker said the loss in Haryana has empowered the SP to declare candidates for six seats in the state. Despite this setback, Pandey emphasised that discussions regarding ticket ..

Hindu side says Gyanvapi complex survey incomplete, seeks direction to ASI

Lawyers representing the Hindu side on Thursday furnished their submissions before a court here in response to the arguments put forth by the Muslim side in the Gyanvapi case two days ago. The Hindu side's plea had demanded a survey by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) in the remaining parts of the Gyanvapi complex. Following the submissions, the court posted the hearing on October 16. Advocate Madan Mohan Yadav, who is representing the Hindu side, said he appeared before Civil Judge Senior Division Yughul Shambhu, and submitted that the survey done by the ASI in the Gyanvapi complex was incomplete. Yadav said the ASI was not in a position to furnish a correct report without excavation and therefore it should be ordered to conduct the excavation and survey the entire Gyanvapi complex. On October 8, the Muslim side -- Anjuman Intezamia Committee -- had presented its views on the petition. The lawyers then reportedly submitted before the court that when the Hindu side has app

Certain section considers it their right to disrespect Hindu deities: UP CM

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday said a certain section of society considers it their right to make derogatory remarks against Hindu deities and break idols, and warned that those indulged in such activities will be dealt with strictly. He also said while non-violence is the ultimate dharma, violence is justified if necessary to protect the nation, religion and the innocent, according to an official statement. Adityanath made the remarks during his speech at the Durga Puja celebrations at Bharat Sevashram Sangh, Sigra in Varanasi. He also said that in West Bengal, where the ritual of worshipping the goddess originates, Sanatan Dharma today appears "helpless and insecure". "Hinduism does not seek the destruction of anyone. Instead, it teaches 'Ahimsa Paramo Dharmah' (non-violence is the highest virtue)...while non-violence is the ultimate dharma, violence is justified if necessary to protect the nation, religion, and the innocent," Adityanath said, according to

Bypolls on 10 Assembly seats INDIA bloc's first test in UP since LS gains

Bypolls on 10 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh will be a litmus test for the INDIA bloc's unity after the group's success in the recent Lok Sabha polls when they won more than 40 seats, significantly contributing to the BJP's failure to win a simple majority in parliament. However, the two INDIA bloc allies in Uttar Pradesh -- Samajwadi Party and Congress -- have not been able to firm-up a seat-sharing pact for the bypolls even though the Congress has staked claims to contest five of the 10 seats, a proposition the SP may not agree with. Leaders from both the parties say their aim is to defeat the BJP, and they are confident they would contest the bypolls together. Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai told PTI, "The party is holding 'Samvidhan Bachao Sammelan' (save Constitution conferences) on all 10 assembly seats that are going to polls. Two such conferences have already been held. We have appointed incharges and observers on all the 10 seats and ground work is on." The assembly
