Putin, Xi Jinping agree to exchange information on Iran-Israel conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping have agreed to exchange sensitive information on the Iran-Israel conflict, the Kremlin said on Thursday. President Putin and Xi Jinping in their hour-long phone call have agreed to issue orders to their relevant agencies to share information on Iran, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov announced. He said both leaders hold a similar stance and "strongly condemn Israel's actions that violate the UN Charter and other norms of international law". Israel launched Operation Rising Lion last week, targeting Iran's nuclear, missile and military infrastructure. Iran later launched retaliatory strikes on Israel. On Wednesday, Russia and the United Arab Emirates called for an immediate cessation of the Israel-Iran conflict and an intensification of political and diplomatic efforts to resolve Tehran's nuclear issue. According to the Kremlin, President Putin discussed the issue during a telephonic conversation with hi

Putin offers to broker peace deal between Iran, Israel amid conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered Wednesday to help mediate an end to the conflict between Israel and Iran, suggesting Moscow could help negotiate a settlement that could allow Tehran to pursue a peaceful atomic program while assuaging Israeli security concerns. Speaking at a roundtable session with senior news leaders of international news agencies, Putin noted that it's a delicate issue, but added that in my view, a solution could be found. Putin said he shared Moscow's proposals with Iran, Israel and the United States. His comments follow a mediation offer that he made in a call with U.S. President Donald Trump last weekend. Trump said Wednesday that he told Putin to keep focused on finding an endgame to his own conflict with Ukraine. I said, Do me a favour, mediate your own,' Trump said he told Putin. I said, Vladimir, let's mediate Russia first. You can worry about this later.' The comments represented a shift for Trump, who earlier this week said he was open to Putin'

Russian court gives Navalny ally 18-yr sentence in absentia amid crackdown

Courts in Russia have convicted one opposition figure in absentia and placed another under house arrest as Moscow continues its crackdown on dissent. Leonid Volkov, a close associate of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, was sentenced in absentia to 18 years in prison on Wednesday after being found guilty on criminal charges. Moscow's Second Western District Military convicted Volkov under 40 counts including justifying terrorism, organising and financing an extremist group, rehabilitating Nazism, and creating a non-governmental organisation that violated citizens' rights, Russian news agencies reported. As well as the prison sentence, Volkov was also fined 2 million rubles (approximately USD 25,000) and banned from using the internet for 10 years. "Oh no! They banned me from the internet for 10 years as prosecutors requested, but I've already been using it," Volkov wrote in a tongue-in-cheek social media post after the sentence was released. "Damn. Russian strike kills 5, including 1 year old, hours after Trump calls Putin

At least five people, including a one-year-old child, were killed in a Russian drone strike on the northern Ukrainian city of Pryluky overnight, regional governor Viacheslav Chaus said on Thursday. Six more people were wounded in the attack and have been hospitalised, Chaus said. According to him, six Shahed-type drones struck residential areas of Pryluky early Thursday morning, causing severe damage to residential buildings. Hours later, 17 people were wounded in a Russian drone strike on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv early Thursday, including children, a pregnant woman, and a 93-year-old woman, regional head Oleh Syniehubov wrote on Telegram. At around 1.05 am, Shahed-type drones struck two apartment buildings in the city's Slobidskyi district, causing fires and destroying several private vehicles. "By launching attacks while people sleep in their homes, the enemy once again confirms its tactic of insidious terror," Syniehubov wrote on Telegram.
