Jeswin Aldrin finishes 11th in men's long jump final in World C'ships

National record holder Jeswin Aldrin finished a disappointing 11th with one legal mark of 7.77m in the men's long jump final of the World Athletics Championships here on Thursday. After fouling his first two attempts, Aldrin produced a 7.77m jump in his third effort, which was not enough for him to be among the top eight in the 12-man final. Only the top eight jumpers remain in the competition after the first three rounds while the remaining were eliminated. Aldrin, who had entered into the showpiece as world season leader with his 8.42m national record effort in March, had on Wednesday produced a best jump of 8.0m in the qualification round to be the 12th and the last qualifier for the final. His last two jumps in the qualification round were also fouls. Earlier in the day, Ram Baboo finished 27th in men's 35km race walk event in a time of 2 hours 39 minutes 07 seconds. The 24-year-old holds the national record of 2:29:56. The 21-year-old Aldrin had become the second Indian male

World Athletics Championships: Jeswin Aldrin qualifies for long jump finals

National record holder long jumper Jeswin Aldrin qualified for his maiden World Athletics Championships finals but fellow competitor Murali Sreeshankar made a shock exit at the qualification round after a below-par show here on Wednesday. Aldrin, who entered the showpiece as season leader with his 8.42m national record effort in March, cleared 8.0m in his first attempt and fouled his next two jumps. But that was sufficient for him to make it to the 12-man final to be held on Thursday. Those who cleared automatic qualification distance of 8.15m or top 12 from the two qualification groups made it to the finals. Aldrin, who finished sixth in Group B qualification round, was the 12th best performer overall and made it to the finals as the last qualifier. Sreeshankar had a disappointing series of 7.74m, 7.66m and 6.70m as he finished 12th in Group A qualification round and 22nd overall. His exit in the qualification round was another shocker for the Indian camp reeling under 3000m ...

Athletics: Who is Erriyon Knighton? The US teen eying Usain Bolt's records

From cars to race times, 19-year-old sprinter Erriyon Knighton has an appreciation for all things fast. He's combining his two passions to provide extra fuel: Should Knighton achieve Olympic glory, he's treating himself to a black McLaren supercar. One thing he can't speed away from are the inevitable comparisons to retired Jamaican sensation Usain Bolt, which Knighton only welcomes as he gears up for the world championships. Because really, slow and steady is more Knighton's speed in his evolution as a sprinter. He feels patience will get him to the summit as he chases American teammate Noah Lyles, the two-time defending world 200-meter champion and recently crowned 100-meter title-winner. "We're not in a rush to be great," Knighton said in an interview with The Associated Press in the lead-up to the first round of the 200 on Wednesday. "I mean, greatness doesn't come overnight. Knowing this, we're just taking everything step-by-step." His step-by-step blueprint has led to faster

World Athletics Championships: Neeraj Chopra eyes top of the podium finish

A World Championships gold is the only medal missing in Neeraj Chopra's decorated cabinet and the superstar Indian javelin thrower will fancy his chances as no clear-cut favourite has emerged ahead of the showpiece beginning here on Saturday. The 25-year-old Chopra has won gold medals in Olympics (Tokyo in 2021), Asian Games (2018) and Commonwealth Games (2018), besides becoming the Diamond League champion last year. He won a silver in the 2022 World Championships in USA and he would be one of the gold medal contenders this time here. If Chopra wins a gold, he will become only the second Indian after shooter Abhinav Bindra to win a yellow metal each in the Olympics and World Championships in individual sport. Bindra, the first Indian individual event Olympic gold winner in 2008, had also achieved a World Championships top podium finish in 10m air rifle in 2006 in Zagreb. Going by the current form of the top javelin throwers, there is no hot favourite to stand on the top of the pod

Javelin thrower Jena gets Hungarian visa, to compete at World Championships

Indian javelin thrower Kishore Jena on Friday received his visa to travel to Hungary, paving the way for him to compete at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest from August 19-27. Confirming the development, an Athletics Federation of India (AFI) source said that his visa has been cleared after his interview/appointment on Friday morning and he will get his travel documents later in the day. On Wednesday, Jena's visa application was cancelled by the Hungarian embassy in India. It led to Olympic gold-medallist javelin-thrower Neeraj Chopra coming out in support of him and requesting Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar to "find a solution". "Just heard that there are issues with Kishore Jena's VISA, preventing him from entering Hungary for the World C'ships. I hope the authorities are able to find a solution, as this is one of the biggest moments of his career. Let's do everything we can," he posted on X (formerly Twitter), tagging MEA and Jaishankar. World Athletics: Definitely, I'm close to breaching 90m - Neeraj Chopra

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra has been trying it for a while now and the ace javelin thrower says he is "close" to breaching the coveted 90-metre mark and just needs "favourable conditions" to assist him in his quest. Last year, the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist had fallen agonisingly short of the 90m mark, throwing the spear to a distance of 89.94m at the Diamond League meet in Stockholm. "Definitely, I'm close. I just need one perfect day with favourable weather conditions and I am confident I'll be able to achieve the throw," Chopra said during an interview with Jio Cinema. The Indian ace will be leading the country's challenge in the World Championship here. He said he has got used to dealing with the huge expectations from him every time he takes to the field. "I have somewhat become accustomed to handling pressure. However, when I participate in competitions that occur once every two to four years (like the World Championships and the Olympics), there is undoubtedly a sense

Neeraj Chopra to lead 28-member team in World Athletics Championships

Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will once again headline India's campaign in the World Athletics Championships beginning on August 19 in Budapest, Hungary, as the country will field a 28-member team in the showpiece. Surprisingly, the Sports Ministry announced the team instead of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). Asian record holder shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor has pulled out of the August 19-27 showpiece as he is recovering from the groin injury sustained during the Asian Championships in July. National record holder high jumper Tejaswin Shankar, 800m runner K M Chanda and 20km race walker Priyanka Goswami (also national record holder) have also decided to skip the World Championships as they wanted to focus on the Asian Games (September 23 to October 8) in Hangzhou, China. Reigning Diamond League champion Chopra is seeking to clinch a gold medal in Budapest after winning a silver in the last edition in Eugene, USA, in 2022. The Team: Women: Jyothi Ya

Sports Ministry funds 28 Indian athletes for World Athletics Championship

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) is all set to fund the Indian contingent, consisting of 28 athletes, participating in the World Athletics Championships, which gets underway in Budapest, Hungary, on August 19. The total Indian contingent will be a 42-member squad, which would also include coaches and support staff, as they head to the Hungarian capital to compete against the world's best athletes. The earlier edition last year saw six athletes from India making it to the finals and three managing to finish within the top eight. India's ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra bagged the silver medal. The funding is set to cover the training cost of the team, accommodation costs, airfare, visa and Out of Pocket Allowance, MYAS said in a media release. Among the 28 athletes competing, 13 belong to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), whereas 15 would be making their World Championships debut. Shaili Singh (19) is the youngest member of the squad, who will be making her .

World Athletics Championships: Four Indian javelin throwers qualify

In a rare instance in Indian athletics, four men's javelin throwers from the country have qualified for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, later this month, but injury to one member of the quartet meant that all of them will not take part in the big-ticket event. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra has already qualified for the August 19-27 showpiece as wild card by virtue of being the Diamond League champion and Kishore Jena also made the cut in the world ranking quota. Rohit Yadav and DP Manu also made it to the 36 javelin throwers' list to compete in the world championships. But Rohit had recently undergone a surgery on his throwing elbow and he will miss the World Championships. World Athletics (WA) on Wednesday updated its Road to Budapest list after the qualification period ended on July 30. Jena, who won gold in the Sri Lankan National Championships on July 30 with a personal best of 84.38m, took the 36th spot. A country can have three athletes in each event but the ..

World Championships: Eldhose Paul finishes 9th in men's triple jump final

India's Eldhose Paul finished ninth in the men's triple jump final while the 4x400m relay team ended 12th overall, failing to make it to the medal round in the World Championships here. The 25-year-old Paul produced a best jump of 16.79m in the three attempts he had, and failed to make it to the top eight. His series read 16.37, 16.79 and 13.86m. Only the top eight finishers after three rounds get three more jumps. Paul had become the first Indian to qualify for the triple jump final after finishing 12th overall in the qualification round with an effort of 16.68m. Paul, who reached here just a few days ago due to visa issues, has a season's and personal best of 16.99m which he had recorded while winning gold in the Federation Cup in April. Olympic champion Pedro Pichardo of Portugal won the gold medal with a best jump of 17.95m while last edition bronze medallist Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso and Tokyo Games silver winner Zhu Yaming of China finished second and third with b
