Use every tool to drive down COVID transmission: WHO chief to world leaders

Geneva (Switzerland), May 11 (ANI): World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a press conference on May 11 urged the world leaders to "use every tool" at its disposal to drive down COVID-19 transmission. WHO chief said, "My message to the leaders is that use every tool to your disposal to drive transmission down right now. Even if your country has a downward trend, now is the time to surge your capacities. Even in countries with highest vaccination rates public health capacity must be strengthening to prepare for the possibility of vaccine evading variants and for future emergencies." Informing individuals the risk possessed in every contact they have outside their household, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "My message to individuals is that every contact you have with someone outside your household is a risk. The level of risk varies according to the type of contact, the duration of contact and the level of transmission where you live."

Yoga, meditation session organised for COVID patients in Delhi's Sardar Patel centre

New Delhi, May 11 (ANI): India is under tight grip of 2nd wave of coronavirus. Amid the devastation, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) initiated a stress buster session for COVID-19 patients at Sardar Patel COVID Care Centre in Chhatarpur in Delhi. ITBP's stress counsellors offered them yoga and meditation session at the centre. Sardar Patel COVID Care Centre reopened on April 26 amid surge in COVID-19 cases. From 26th April till now, the centre admitted 1,065 patients requiring oxygen support.

COVID: Sonu Nigam inaugurates oxygen bank and isolation centre in Mumbai

Mumbai, May 11 (ANI): The whole country is fighting with the second wave of COVID-19 currently. Amid the devastation, singer Sonu Nigam inaugurated oxygen bank and isolation centre for COVID-19 patients in Mumbai. The initiative was taken by MP Manoj Kotak. The centre is opened at Friends School Academy in Mulund. Sonu Nigam also reviewed the centre. The step has been taken to fight with oxygen deficiency currently reigning in the state.

With new 3.29 lakh COVID cases, India witnesses significant dip

New Delhi, May 11 (ANI): With 3,29,942 new COVID cases reported in last 24 hours, India witnessed a dip in COVID-19 cases on May 11. India's COVID caseload now stands at 2,29,92,517 and currently, there are 37,15,221 active cases in the nation. 3,876 new deaths were registered in 24 hrs taking the total toll to 2,49,992. In last 24 hrs, 3,56,082 people have been discharged. So far, 17,27,10,066 COVID vaccine jabs have been inoculated.

COVID: 24x7 oxygen war room set up in Thiruvananthapuram to cater to soaring demand

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), May 11 (ANI): As COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the country causing a shortage of essential medical supplies, the Kerala government has set up an oxygen war room and shortage centre to cater to the rising demand. Set up at a government college for women in Thiruvananthapuram, the centre is run by 20 volunteers and is monitored 24/7 by the district collector."We are monitored by the District Collector and we work 24/7. We have a registration portal for the hospitals," said Dr Jacob, in charge of the centre. Both private hospitals and government hospitals are provided oxygen through the war room, which also has a buffer system."We have a registration portal where hospitals in need of oxygen can register. According to that, we provide oxygen. There are 20 volunteers and four doctors here who monitor this. Enough oxygen is ensured through a buffer system," Dr Jacob added. Anupam Kher's 'Project Heal India' to provide medical aid amid COVID-19 crisis

Mumbai, May 11 (ANI): As the country is reeling under the devastating second wave of pandemic which has strained country's health infrastructure, Veteran actor Anupam Kher joined hands with Global Cancer Foundation, USA and Bharat Forge, India to start an initiative called 'Project Heal India' with an aim to provide medical aid and other relief to needy in these unprecedented times. Organisations will provide critical equipment and other life-supporting devices to needy institutions and hospitals across India. The first consignment of CrossVent Ventilators (ICU Critical Care), Medtronic Ventilators, ResMed non-invasive ventilation devices and oxygen concentrators are expected to arrive in India within the week.

Chennai, May 10 (ANI): Scores of people gathered outside Government Kilpauk Medical College in Chennai on May 10 to procure Remdesivir. The potential drug used in the treatment of COVID-19 patients. Centre fails to manage COVID 2nd wave despite warning, says Owaisi

Hyderabad, May 10 (ANI): All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi on May 10 slammed Central government over the management of the current COVID situation in the country. He said Centre failed in their vaccination policy, they failed in providing oxygen to state governments and Union Territories (UT). "We have implemented 4 major reforms in the bed allotment system. We have institutionalized individual IDs for people working in the war room and booking beds. So the doctor who has booked the bed, his name if figure. It will fix accountability. Now, patients will get SMS alert the moment any booking is made in their name. In 3rd reform, time allowed to patients between allotment of bed and admission has been reduced to 4 hours from 10 hours. Work underway to set up 300 oxygen plants in UP: State CM

Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh), May 10 (ANI): Amid acute shortage of oxygen in the country in wake of COVID-19 second wave, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath on May 10 said the state government is working to set up 300 Oxygen Plants in UP. "Second wave posed a new challenge before us - the demand for oxygen went up suddenly. We have to supply oxygen to Ayodhya too, from where it is being supplied to nearby districts. We are thankful to Govt of India and PM Modi who is running special trains for this," CM said in Ayodhya. "Oxygen Express is being run, tankers being sent on large aircraft of Air Force. Y'day, we supplied 1000 MT of oxygen in the state. But it shouldn't remain restricted to supply, Oxygen Plants should be established too. Work is underway to set up 300 Oxygen Plants in state," CM added.

India brings 6 oxygen containers from Saudi Arabia to India

Kutch (Gujarat), May 10 (ANI): In order to provide seamless transportation of medical oxygen, The India Navy, carrying six cryogenic oxygen containers from Saudi Arabia arrived at Mundra port on May 10. These oxygen containers were taken to Delhi via rail route.

COVID-19 curfew extended till May 17 in Bhopal

Bhopal (MP), May 10 (ANI): Bhopal district administration on May 09 announced that COVID-19 induced curfew in the state capital will be extended till May 17. In wake of COVID-19 infection surge, curfew was imposed on April 12 and was extended subsequently after every 1 week. Essential services and emergency travel are exempted from movement restrictions.

COVID cases dip as India registers 3,66,161 new infections

New Delhi, May 10 (ANI): India witnessed a dip in COVID-19 cases after the country reported 3,66,161 new infections in last 24 hours. With 7,45,237 active cases, COVID caseload of the country stood at 2,26,62,575. 3,754 new deaths in last 24 hours took the toll to 2,46,116. So far, 1,86,71,222 people won the battle against COVID-19. According to Indian Council of Medical Research, till date 30,37,50,077 samples have been tested for COVID-19 virus. Vaccination drive is underway and 17,01,76,603 vaccine doses have been inoculated.

Delhi metro services to remain suspended till 5 am on May 17

New Delhi, May 10 (ANI): Amid crippling COVID-19 situation in national capital, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on May 09 announced that metro rail services will remain suspended till 5 am on May 17. Delhi entered into an extended period of lockdown with strict restrictions to further curb the COVID surge. Positivity rate of Delhi dipped to 23% from 35% amid lockdown restrictions.

Petrol at Rs 91.53, diesel at Rs 82.06 per litre in Delhi

New Delhi, May 10 (ANI): Petrol and diesel prices in the national capital stood at Rs 91.53 and Rs 82.06 per litre, respectively on May 10. The petrol prices were increased by 26 paise per litre and diesel by 33 paise in Delhi. Petrol prices witnessed a minor surge across country and differ from state to state depending on the incidence of value-added tax. In Mumbai, the price of petrol and diesel stood at Rs 97.86 and Rs 89.17 per litre respectively. The price of petrol and diesel in Chennai was Rs 93.38 and Rs 86.96 per litre respectively and Rs 91.66 and Rs 84.90 per litre in Kolkata.

Second consignment of medical aid from Israel arrives in India

Ghaziabad (UP), May 10 (ANI): A flight carrying second consignment of medical aid and equipment from Israel amid the crippling second wave of COVID-19 pandemic has landed in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad. Medical aid including 1,300 oxygen concentrators, 400 ventilators and other medical equipment arrived at Hindon Air Base. Israel sent the first consignment of life-saving equipment to India on May 04. Several countries are sending medical supplies and equipments to help India tide over the COVID-19 situation.
