The Hinduja family, one of India’s oldest business dynasties, continues to channel a significant portion of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts into community development through the Hinduja Foundation. The foundation, led by Managing Trustee Prakash Hinduja, works across sectors including education, healthcare, and water conservation in partnership with public institutions and non-governmental organizations.
A key area of focus has been education. In collaboration with Ashok Leyland, the foundation runs the “Road to School” programme, aimed at improving access to quality education for children in rural areas. The initiative provides digital learning tools, vocational training, and community engagement programmes designed to strengthen foundational learning. According to the foundation, more than 3,500 students have benefitted so far, with reported improvements in literacy levels in target areas.
Ajay Hinduja, a member of the foundation’s steering committee, said the family’s CSR investments are designed to create sustainable social impact while aligning with national priorities. “Education remains a critical factor in reducing poverty and enabling long-term development,” he said.
Water conservation has been another major focus area for the Hinduja Foundation. Under its collaboration with the government’s Jal Jeevan Mission, the foundation supports projects aimed at improving access to clean water and restoring natural water bodies. The initiative has reportedly reached 4,200 villages across 19 states and union territories, benefiting nearly five million people. Water ATMs have been installed in several rural communities to provide affordable, safe drinking water and reduce dependence on unsafe sources.
Prakash Hinduja said the aim is to make water security a shared responsibility. “Water is not a privilege; it is a necessity,” he said. “The efforts to restore wetlands and preserve natural resources are essential to ensure sustainability for future generations.”
The Hinduja Foundation continues to expand its network of partnerships to strengthen its impact. With a focus on long-term community welfare, its initiatives reflect a broader shift in how Indian conglomerates are linking corporate purpose with social responsibility.
