When is World Biodiversity Day?

World Biodiversity Day or International Day for Biological Diversity is a United Nations-sanctioned International Day for the promotion of biodiversity-related issues.

The day is celebrated and observed on May 22.
World Biodiversity Day falls within the scope of the UN Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals. International Day for Biological Diversity came into existence in 1993 when it was formed by the Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

From 1993 till 2000, World Biodiversity Day was celebrated on 29th December. It was on 29th December that the Convention on Biological Diversity went into effect.

It was on December 20 in 2000 that May 22 was designated as the new date for celebrating International Day for Biological Diversity.

May 22 marked the adoption of the Convention on May 22, 1992, at the Rio Earth Summit. Each year, International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated with a different theme that aims to convey to people that rebuilding and conservation of biodiversity can help mankind in finding solutions to serious issues like climate change, and health issues.

Seminars and events are organized to celebrate the day and spread awareness about this day. NGOs and other groups also come together to organize interesting activities to engage more and more people in biodiversity. These activities are organised on both national and international levels.
