Who is Payel Sarkar?

Payel Sarkar is a Bengali actor-turned-politician. She joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in February 2021. Sarkar will be contesting the West Bengal Assembly elections from Behala Purba in Kolkata.

The 37-year-old actress made her debut in 2004 with the film "Shudu Tumi" and has since then, been a part of several Bengali TV serials and movies. She has a degree in History from Jadavpur University in Kolkata.
 
Payal Sarkar's foray into politics
 
On February 25, Sarkar joined the BJP in the presence of the party president Jagat Prakash Nadda and Bengal unit chief Dilip Ghosh in Kolkata.
 
After joining the saffron party, she said she would now work for West Bengal.
 
In an interview, Sarkar said joining the party will not create a rift in the Bengali film industry or create "groupism". The actress said after entertaining people for over a decade, she now wants to serve the people of Bengal. The actress also said she will not leave people's side post-election if she gets the opportunity.
