A high 86.57 per cent out of 9,69,425 candidates passed this year's Class 10 Madhaymik examination, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education announced on Friday morning. Purba Medinipur, Kalimpong and Kolkata were among the top three districts with the highest percentage of successful candidates, WBBSE president Ramanuj Ganguly told reporters here. Sixty-six candidates feature among the top 10. Adrit Sarkar from Raiganj Coronation High School in Uttar Dinajpur district occupied the top rank, scoring 696 marks and 99.43 per cent. Anubhav Biswas and Soumya Pal jointly stood second with 694 marks. While Biswas is a student of Vivekananda Vidyamandir of Malda, Pal studied at Bishnupur High School in Bankura. With 693 marks, Ishani Chakraborty of Kotulpur Sarojbasini School, Bankura, occupied the third spot, the WBBSE said. She emerged the topper among female candidates in this year's secondary exams. The next year's class 10 state board examinations in West Bengal will begin on February 10, an official said. The tests conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education will continue till February 22. The exams will begin at 10.45 am, WBBSE president Ramanuj Ganguly said on Friday. Marks of 12,468 candidates, who appeared for the secondary exams in 2024, went up after reviewing the answer sheets. "This thing (awarding less marks initially) should not have taken place. But the fault lies with the respective examiner," he added.
The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) to decide on a representation seeking cancellation of a change in the timing of the class 10 examination announced by it. The bench of Justice Biswajit Basu also asked the WBBSE to inform it about the decision on Thursday, when the matter will be heard again. The timing of the class 10 examinations of the West Bengal board, which will be held in February, was advanced by two hours, but no reason was cited. After the revision, the exams will begin at 9.45 am instead of the usual 11.45 am. A teacher moved the court challenging a January 18 notification of the board rescheduling the time of commencement of the examination from 11.45 am to 9.45 am, claiming that it will inconvenience lakhs of students who will be appearing for the examinations at numerous centres across the state.
