The government is working on plans to make Posoco, which manages electricity grids in the country, an independent regulator to ensure stringent grid discipline.

The move comes against the backdrop of massive failure of power grids last year that had pushed more than half of the country's population into darkness.

Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia today said the plan is likely to be ready in the next 12 months.

"We are working on a plan to give full independence to Posoco and make it an independent regulator (for electricity grids). It is likely to be ready in the  next 12 months," Scindia told reporters here.

Currently, Posoco (Power Operation System Co) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of state-run Power Grid Corp.

Overdrawal of electricity by states beyond their quota and grid indiscipline were primarily blamed for the grid failures last year.
