GVK Power to invest Rs 40,000 cr in capacity expansion

GVK Power will add 6,800 MW power to its existing capacity at an investment of Rs 40,000 crore, a top company executive said today.

The company will expand two of its existing gas-based units by 800 MW each and go for two greenfield projects of 2,640 MW each in Andhra Pradesh, GVK Power Managing Director Krishna Ram Bhupal told reporters on the sidelines of Partnership Summit-2012 which concluded today.

It has two gas-based plants -- Jegurupadu and Gautami power projects -- with a total capacity of 943 MW.

"The new projects will be gas-based and coal-based in Andhra Pradesh. For coal-based plants, we are going for two plants of 660X4 MW and looking to make them operational by 2017," he said.

 

The company is in the process of identifying location to set up thermal power plants and the fuel linkage, he added.

"We are looking for coal supply for the projects and are also in the process of identifying land," Bhupal said.

Replying to a query, he said the company may import coal from Hancock Coal mines in Australia which the group acquired last year.

He, however, added that the expansion of gas-based projects will largely depend on the availability of gas.
